I'm just throwing this out there. If anyone out there is an RN who works in Bloomington, IN, could you tell me how the job market is out there?

My husband might be facing a job change to this location within the next several months. It's causing me alot of anxiety because I love the job I'm in now and I don't want to walk into a bad work environment like I was in before I got my current job (bad experience).

I work in a medium size hospital med-surg rehab unit. I'd love something similar if I can find it. I have a real passion for rehab.

THANKS

The two hospitals in Bloomington are IU Health Bloomington Hospital and Monroe Hospital. I've heard good and bad things about working for both. Monroe hospital has less turn over but Bloomington hospital is much bigger and busier. I'm sure you can find job listings on the respective websites. GOOD LUCK!

IUHBH does have an acute rehab unit. I'm not sure about Monroe Hospital as it's very small, 28 beds total in the hospital if I remember correctly.

Well hello fellow Bloomingtonian/Indiana nurses! As a new ASN graduate I can say the market is a bit saturated right now with IU and Ivy Tech having just graduated a new batch of nurses. That's not to say it's impossible, as there are always ads for experienced nurses. There are also multiple cities within about an hour or so drive, which obviously increases the possibilities.

Most definitely agree with Bloomgirl. If your family is relocating to Bloomington, there are actually many other options available to you for work besides just the two hospitals in Btown. There's also a hospital in Martinsville, which is about a twenty minute drive north of Bloomington. Or, there are about three hospitals on the south side of Indianapolis you could try. It'd be about a 35 min to an hour drive if you lived in Bloomington to get to these hospitals. However, if you and your husband did something like choose to live in a town further north of Bloomington such as Martinsville, or in Greenwood (which is a south side suburb of Indianapolis, and is about 40 mins north of Bloomington), your options would really open up quite a bit. Best of luck in your search!

Just so you know, in case neither of you has ever been to Bloomington, it's a college town, with a lot of college town shenanigans. On the one hand, there's quite a bit of culture down there. They have the Lotus Festival, among many others, and they have operas and plays that are put on quite frequently by their students because of the Jacob's School of Music. On the other hand, though, traffic is HORRIBLE down there when IU's regular academic year is in session, especially during mid-August when everybody and their neighbor seems to be moving. Also, you have a lot of impaired and crazy drivers down there because of the college parties (particularly around Little 5 week) and college drivers. Nonetheless, if you don't live close to downtown or anywhere on East or West 3rd St, you'll probably not have near as many issues :).

Thanks! This helps alot. It is encouraging to know there's jobs out there, I'm leary of the college town aspects of it though. I've been there twice, and while it is a pretty place to visit, I don't think I'd want to live in the center of town due to the parties and other things that go on in big college campuses.
