How I studied for the nclex

Published

Hi,

I took the exam on march 6th (computer shut off after 165 questions) and received my quick results on march 8th 2015 stating I passed.

I wanted to take those on-line courses, however the cost was out of my price range. So this is how I studied and the study aids I used.

1.I bought the book Lippincott's content review for NCLEX-RN by Diane M. Billings

  • I separated each topic into time frames, I began with psychiatry, childbearing, neonates, surgery (shortest chapters first) and then the remainder I focused on paediatrics and medicine.
  • Make SHORT side notes on things you need to remember ie Hypo/hyperthyroidism

2. In the book it came with a CD, I did free on-line question from NCLEX 3500

  • I would study 2hrs-3hrs after work as stated above, and after I finished studying the book I would do the on-line questions from the topic I studied (depending on the day I would do anywhere from 75-150 questions per day)
  • Do as many questions as you can and READ why you got it RIGHT or WRONG (the questions taught me a lot; it gives you different reasons why one answer was wrong or MORE right than the others)

3. I bought the book Prioritization, Delegation and assignment 3rd edition by Lacharity

  • I read this book to differentiate what LPN and UAPs were allowed to do.
  • Read and the questions the Last week before my exams

4. I bought Lippincotts NClEX RN study cards

  • I would bring 100 of these cards with me where ever I would go and knew I would be waiting. (I would bring these on my work break and quiz my self)

5. The last 2 days before my exam I ONLY did questions, because with my stress and anxiety I knew nothing I studied would stick to my brain.

Added side note; before I took my exam I read different topics on this board on how to study for the NCLEX which helped me prepare and study (a huge thank you to all the nurses BEFORE me and AFTER me who took the time to write about their experiences and offer their studying tips). Therefore it is only right to return the favour.
