How do I make the "right" choice??

Published

I am feeling so out of it right now. I am in my last semester of ns and I still don't know where I should be trying to apply for an internship. One of my classmates asked me what dept did I want to work in after graduating and I said, maybe Med/Surg. She said, "I hope you are not SERIOUS or just STUPID! no one in their right mind would pick med/surg on purpose. You will be treated like crap". She goes on to say, "I'm going into the ER or ICU. You know the old saying, those that can do, those that can't do med/surg". What is so wrong with med/surg??? What's wrong with me?? Should I really be considering one of the other depts? Can anyone share how/when you decided and what dept you are in. Did you make the "right" choice and loving it, or do you have regrets and wish that you had gone in another direction.

Don't let your classmate bother you...you should do whatever is best for yourself. I have found that the best thing for me has been to just let things happen. I have let my experiences shape my goals, instead of my goals shaping my experiences, and it's worked for me. I'm working in short term rehab within a LTC---someplace I never thought I "saw myself" in nursing school, and it has been the best thing for me. Good luck finishing up nursing school!

I am a new RN and after talking to a bunch of RNs/professors etc decided to do med/surg. I like it, although I have 4-5 pts per shift. I think after this experience I can do anything I like... including ER or ICU... In the past RNs who wanted to do ER or ICU needed to have a solid med/surg background but now because of the shortage they hire new grads... That's how we get some new RNs full of crap because they believe they are so good that they got in ER and ICU and then some of them are not even able to complete their orientation there. Remember at the end it's YOUR choice and it's up to YOU...

Oh, and smth else: for my final leadership rotation I chose med/surg while one of my classmates chose ER and the other ICU and they were saying they would never chose med/surg etc... Guess what after we graduated both of them went to med/surg... Don't listen to everyone because they might not know what they are talking about. Good luck! :-)
