How do I get into Labor delivery?

Published

Hello! I have been a nurse for two years, working on a medical surgical unit as a RN and charge nurse. I have always had an interest in maternity birth and care. In school I was never chosen to precept on these units and I've applied with no luck yet. What's the secret into getting hired or yet alone an interview. I'm staying positive but it's very hard. I am willing to do things outside of work to prepare and get me a job working with this populating. Please help :(

Hi! I am a new nurse and is interested in working in L & D but I just don't know where to start. I am currently working part time in a nursing home. I looked for hospital jobs but they require experience and have no idea how to get them without getting into a hospital. Thank you!

Did you get any certifications or joined any associations before applying?

Have you joined the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses? Have you gotten any relevant certifications (like electronic fetal monitoring)? If not, I would start there.

Can you get these certifications while in nursing school?

You can complete fetal heart monitoring coursework while in school. Most specialty certifications require that you have worked in that area for a minimum amount of time (typically 1-2 years) before you're eligible to take the exam. The fetal heart monitoring certification just requires that you have a license.
