How do I become an ER nurse?

Published

I have just recently decided that I wanted to move into the medical field and make it a career.

So basically I just need to know from beginning to end on where to start and the process to become an ER nurse. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks :)

Nursing school lol

I know that lol. I mean what classes what do I need to have done before. Stuff like that

Specializes in Critical Care, ED, Cath lab, CTPAC,Trauma.

There are no special glasses in school to take towards any specialty. The education in the US is a generalist education where you are educated on all areas of nursing and you specialize after school.

I will tell you that while it is possible...it is difficult to get an ED position right out of school for there are very few positions open to new grads. Many departments only hire one or two new grads at a time as the orientation is extensive and lengthy in this fast paced critical environment. It is difficult for new grads to master their basic nursing skills and critical thinking/decision making at the same time.

Your best bet would be get good grades and find a ED tech position while you are in school.

Excellent ideas, Esme! In our area, the only times the ERs hire new nurses are if they have been an ER tech or something similar - maybe a secretary.
