First, you need to find out whether your school's first semester qualifies as complete CNA training. It's possible that not all do. If it does, then you would contact your state Board of Nursing and request an application for the CNA certification test. You submit the application (along with whatever documentation you need and the application fee) and then take the test.

I was required to be certified CNA before clinicals. The course was offered at my school (a votec). 8 week course, 1st week was classroom learning:ADL's, vitals, transfers ect). The rest of the course was spent as clinicals in a nursing home. Your Director of Nursing should have the info you need. Good luck!

Exactly what I did. Our first hands-on nursing class was a semester's worth of nursing lab (learning vitals, patient care, etc.) and then clinical time in a LTC facility. After that, my university gave me some kind of documentation (it was 8 years ago so I forget what it was exactly) to send to the board of nursing, and I was sent an application for the test and possible test dates/sites. I just went to the community college and took the test on the same day as the CNA classes took theirs. (They all looked at me strangely since they all knew each other and I just showed up to take the exam!)
