How hard was Organic Chemistry?

Published

I'm starting my BSN this January, but before I'm admitted, I need to take a course in Organic Chemistry, and get at least a "B". I did great in General Chemistry, but I'm a little nervous about Organic. Is the material in Organic much harder to learn than General?

Any advice will be appreciated...

Thanks!

I took Orgo I and II. Orgo I was very interesting and the class average was like 55% I think. Orgo I was only slightly harder that Chem II for me. Orgo II was a boring, horrible class that drained so much of my time. The average was like 35-45%. I passed, that was all that mattered to me.

My advice, do not wait to study anything for Orgo II. If you have the time, do it asap. It is not a class you want to repeat, so just do it right the first time.

I am not trying to scare you. In fact, my orgo I&II were 5 credit courses which are not required for most nursing schools. Maybe, like a few others said, the health sciences one is less intense.

Good Luck

Yeah, there are organic chem classes that are for nursing students and ones for BIO students. My organic was also 5 credits and I hated every minute of it. I feel that General chem classes were easy and I loved that they were math based. Everything could be worked out on paper. Organic is very thought based, no math and if you don't get it then you are constantly in a state of struggle to keep up. I got a B, but God knows how my teacher came up with that value! I have found amongst my friends and nurses that if you are good in math that you usually do better in general than organic. If you are able to speak/learn languages but do not like math so much, then organic will be easier than general. Organic is often referred to as learning a language. Good Luck.

If they offer a health sciences version of Organic chem at your school, take it.

The regular version for BIO majors is considered a pre-med weed out class. The class has been known to make baby doc-wannabe's cry!

Of course, it is passable with a lot of study.

Don't stress yourself though, take the health science version which is less intense and will teach you what you need to know.

Organic chemistry defies all rules of logic. Forget everything you learned before! One tip I can give you is look at orgo from an analytical point of view... almost like how you would study philosophy. If you aproach orgo as formulas and math you'll just confuse yourself. I'm a nursing student but I didn't take nursing orgo so I don't know how that would be. Probably easier than the one I took. Good luck! You should be fine...

(It's true orgo is the pre med weed out class but P-Chem is by far the hardest subject you can possibly take.)

I love Organic chem, my grades were good (3.7 gpa) but I didnt get into nursing this semester because I did not take the entrance exam; I decided to take organic chemistry and boy was it hard; in the end I got a A. I solve all the problems in the book and did the problems over a lot of time. I really love this class, hopefully it is going to prepare me for nursing courses in the future.

I hated it, However it is nothing you can not overcome, just study more than usual and you should be great! Good Luck!

I took Organic Chem as a non-nursing student. We made a lot of models and drew pictures. I thought it was fun.
