Hi, everyone. I'm a newbie. I'm 18 years old, and I never knew what I wanted to do with my life until I recently decided to become a nurse. I'm wanting to start my career as a LPN. But, I'm not sure how to begin. Can anyone walk me through the whole process of going to college to study practical nursing? When I was in high school, I never thought I would want to go to college, so I never paid attention when my counselor told me about the whole admissions process. What are pre reqs? What do I need to do to get accepted? How to pay for it? I need a step by step guide, just to make sure I understand :) Thanks!

there should be a nursing handbook for your school that outlines everything you need to do. First find out what prereqs you need and start taking them. Take all of them and try and get an A in every one and then apply for admmision.

Prereqs are courses you need to take before you are accepted into a formal degree program. Seriously, you need to aim for an A in every class you take, competition for nursing school is higher than ever and schools are looking for the best of the best. Speak to an academic advisor at the college you intend on attending, they can guide you step by step because every school has different requirements.

I don't know what state you live in, but in Oregon, there is a list of schools that is on the state's board of nursing website. Our RNs, LPNs and CNAs are under the state's board of nursing. Some states are different. Find a list of schools in your state that have an LPN/LVN program. Try to look at community colleges rather than "for profit" schools. You'll have lower tuition and you'll be able to transfer credits or use credits toward a higher degree if you are interested. My niece is taking an LPN course in California. Those with the highest test scores (not sure of the percentage) will get admitted to the LPN program without taking more than a couple of pre-requisites. Best advice is to call or go to the closest community college for direction.
Sometimes we need a little break after high school to figure out what direction to take in life. Good luck!!
