How to get a collaborating physician in NC??

Published

I have been a NP for 3 years in AZ but now wanting to relocate to NC. I have had 4 turn downs because I don't have that active licence to practice. I have the certification to call myself a NP- which I think is useless if I can't practice. Anyway please correct me NC NPs but when you get the job don't you use the physician on staff or no? If not, how do you find collaborating physician to even finish applying for your license. Please anyone- I will be moving before February and that is coming soon. Any good advice?

I'm in Georgia but I hear NC is similar. You are coming to a very backward part of the country (and much lower pay). My first collaborative wanted 3k a month and some get that. I'm down to 1,500 per quarter but I do not prescribe any benzodiazapines or pain meds.

Did you find your own collaborative or did they come with your job?

Having worked in NC as an FNP, it is humiliating, you have to be approved for a license by both the BON and Medical Board, you are not allowed to even have a NC license unless you have a doctor that you work for, so the way it works is 2 steps, you need either a NC RN license or be a member of a RN compact state, like TN, not sure if AZ is a member of the compact or not. At this point you can get the first part of your license done, but can't get your official, active license until you get a job offer, at which point, whichever MD that you will be working under will be your collaborative MD, at least that was the way it worked for me.

Good luck, and expect the pay to be much less, generally.......having said that, if you can land a job with the federal govt as a NP, then you can just work under your AZ license and skip the NC process

Thank you for the reply and the good luck. I am part of the compact state and filed for the first part of the licensure. Now to get job offer w/ collaborative. This just seems backwards- but I guess when in Rome.

I was considering taking a job in NC, but knowing that I need two processes to get started is discouraging... let me just keep looking in SC lol.
