How do you deal (failing a class)

Published

This is my first semester of school. I am failing my Nur 108 Fundamentals course. How do you deal with the fact that you may have to take the class over again. I am completely distraut. I cried all last night and didn't even go to my clinicals this morning. I have to get a B on my last test which is 175 points out of 195 and I have to get a C on my final which is 240 points of 300 to barley pass the class.. I need your advice guys. I feel like such a failure. I even helped people study that partied the entire two weeks and crammed the night before and they still pass the test with a C and I got a D. How is that possible. It makes me so mad to know i studied my butt and and they did nothing and still passed the test. Now I may have to accept that fact that I might have to take this class over again.

Just wanted to give a quick update and tell you guys I passed my last test today I got a 168 which is 2 points away from a B. I was shooting for a 175 but I messed up on two questions. So now I have 6 new chapters to study for the final which is on thursday and it is cumlative. WOW. I don't know how but I have got to pass the final with a 250 out of 300 points and you need a 240 to pass the final. But our grade is done by points and you need a total of 1020 to pass the class and I have right now 773

OK, first, stay calm--you can do that. Believe in yourself!

Second: if they have a test review (they did when I took 108), go to it no matter how inconvenient driving out there is going to be. That is the time to look over old tests and ask questions about anything you are not clear on.

Also, go to the MyNursingLab website (if they still make you register for that too), and do all of the test/quiz questions for those chapters. And go to the textbook's website and do the test questions there too, and same with the CD that came with the book. You'd be surprised how many of those questions--or ones very similar to them--show up on the tests.

Read the chapters, or at the least know the vocabulary and what's in the tables/boxes.

Don't compare how you study and do with those who say they never study and get good grades. Several in my class got through 108 with minimal reading, only to be smacked down in 130 and 170 because facts entered the picture and it was time to pick up the textbook. Focus on yourself and don't worry about others do and don't do.

Talk to the CI immediately about missing clinical. I know they give you one clinical day/6 hours that you can miss, so if that's all you missed you should be ok. But still, you should never bail on clinical unless it's life or death.

And as Sharpiemom said, a lot of fundamentals is common sense. Facts come in the next class :)

WOW thank you so much I am going to take all of your advice. I think your advice is going to be really helpful to me. I have two days and tonight to study for the final. So wish me luck.
