Hey guys! I have a question and was wondering if anyone who is working in Southern California or elsewhere in California could give me some insight. I currently work in a small hospital in Southern California(350 beds) on a Cardiac Telemetry floor. I am trying to relocate to the LA area(2 hours away) since my Fiancee lives out there. I just interviewed for another Tele position and they are offering me a little more than I make currently for my base rate...but they do not pay time and a half after 8 hours.
How common is this? I told the recruiter that I would have to think about it since it is in fact a pay cut. Those last 4 hours with time and half really bring up my salary. She responded by saying that many hospitals don't do time and half after 8 hours, and that moving out to the city(LA area), many hospitals are not as generous as them. Was wondering if this is true? I'm stuck in a pickle where I am debating whether to take this job(to be close to fiancee, or to wait for something better since I am not in a HUGE rush, and currently have a job)
Thanks everyone!
Don't know if you're still reading this thread but in my experience a hospital that pays base for first 8 and then time and a half for the last 4 will have different scheduling.
For example, I used to work two shifts in one week and then four shifts on the next. Sometimes you would work one shift, one day off, 3 days in a row, one day off then two again. This schedule is crazy BUT you stay within the "36/40 hour work week" and everything else is OT. Being able to schedule you like that is why they pay you the OT for the last 4 hours.
Then I moved to a hospital that did 12hr base pay and you work 3 days a week. Period. No crazy scheduling. Just 3 days, every other weekend.
Don't know if all hospitals are like that, but this is experience that I had.

Well, looks like you made that move! I have heard from my preceptor that her old hospital pay a lower base rate ($28) for 8 hours then you get OT the last 4 hours, and her current hospital giving higher base rate ($32), but it's straight pay for 12 hours. I believe neither are union hospitals. I know some of the union hospitals start about $40, but hey you gotta get what you can for the first year of experience.
The 1.5x after 8 hours is not only facility dependent but, I even heard that certain units in the same hospital voted NO or Yes to it. Ex ICU at a Kaiser Hospital in Wine Country does straight 12s but all the other units do 8 hours shifts. Those who are scheduled for 8 hours qualify for 1.5 their rate after 8. I have verified this with someone at that facility.
