How common is it for a PMHNP to have a job secured prior to graduation?

I know that the answer to this will depend on where in the country you are - but I'm just curious if it is more common than not that a new PMHNP graduate in the NE (Boston area) would have a job even before graduating? And how generally are these jobs found - are students sought after by headhunters or do you search for jobs far in advance on your own? Thank you in advance :)

I can't comment on PMHNP specifically, but I can comment on NPs in this area. I work with a well respected NP program in the metro area, and most cohorts with have 15-20% of the cohort with job offers prior to graduation. There is then a bit of a lag with only 20-30% of the cohort with job offers at 2 months. By 6 months more than 75% have offers and by 9 months it is near 100% of those actively looking with job offers.

I am on the west coast and in a PMHNP program. They told us that the class that just graduated all had jobs lined up prior to graduation. PMHNPs are in very high demand.

Thank you for the responses. I have read that PMHNPs are in demand - does this fact make it easier for a new NP to gain employment with no prior experience? From what I'm reading on this site, some people are having trouble finding jobs, so I'm curious. I look on Indeed to get an idea of jobs in my area and I don't see much!

I'm a PMHNP in the Boston area, graduated in May 2013. There were a couple people in my program that had jobs secured prior to graduation and a few more that had started interviewing, for the most part they had started pursing this on their own. I didn't start looking until I passed the ANCC exam, and once I put my resume up on a few job search engines I got at least one call a day from recruiters. I secured a job within about 6 weeks of looking/interviewing; the job I took came from a recruiter seeing my profile on LinkedIn and contacting me. There were a fair number of PMHNP jobs listed, but a lot of the calls I got were for jobs that were not posted. I'm in touch with a number of new grad PMHNPs and they did not have a problem finding employment. It was by far an easier job search than when I was a new grad RN.

Thank you for the response Averykat. Can you give me an idea of salaries in this area? Again, I know there are lots of variables and most of the job postings I've read don't include salary. Thank you :)

I had two offers, both were salary for full time work, M-F, no call, similar benefits: one was for $100k and one was for $120k. I ended up taking the one that paid more because it was a better fit overall.

I recently had an interview for a PMHNP program and my interviewer mentioned how they often get recruitment calls from around the country and how it is a great time to go into this field. I'm quite excited to pursue this career.

Averykat Looks like it is time to resign from my job. I have more than a year of experience I do not even earn that much... grr.. you must be lucky to live in few areas of the country where PMHNP are in demand.. what was the PTOs offered?

For the position I took it's 20 days/year. The other one was only 2 weeks.

Be sure to take that into consideration. PTO is $$. This maybe me but I would choose PTO over pay as long as you can get paid for it when you leave.

A few areas? This isn't the first post I've seen where you say that PMHNP is only in demand in a few areas of the country. Why do you say that? I see job postings all over the country and have spoken with people who secured jobs in whichever area they looked in.
