How to choose which nursing field to start out in?

Published

Hello Everyone!

I am currently applying to nursing schools and for one of the schools they require me to write my career goals. At this point my goal is to get into a nursing program, pass the NCLEX-RN exam and get a job in a hospital. Obviously the school knows that I want to do those things...but how am I supposed to know which field of nursing to "begin" with. I love the flexibility nursing offers and all the different "realms" it provides. I would like to have my hand in a few to see what I like best/succeed in. Is there any way to determine where to start??? Thanks!!!!

Hi, if you don't know where you want to work, the age old suggestion is go to a basic medical or surgical floor. Either adult or pediatric, (depending on what population you want to work with.) Med-surg is the backbone of nursing. You will develop and polish up all your basic skills and gain a solid nursing knowledge base along the way. You will see a variety of pts. and you will start to notice your likes and dislikes as a nurse.

You should start to get an idea in nursing school, what areas you are attracted to.

Wow, that was very enlightening! Thank you very much for your feedback; I really appreciate it!
