How can they say I am not a viable candidate?

Published

I have recently put myself back on the job market looking for a hospice company that would be supportive of higher education, and reimbursement accordingly. etc.

One of my dear old friends referred me to the hospice she works with . Trinity Hospice, Providence Healthcare. I have had nothing but bad experiences with them!

I should say about 2 years ago I interviewed for a Team Manager role. The interview went well. I was called into a second with a panel group and it went well. The manager said she'd call me in a few days and NEVER did. I called, emailed, and emailed again only to ask about this position as there was an another offer looming. I never GOT the courtesy call back saying we gave it to someone else.

I forgave that, the manager who interviewed me was scattered and eldery, I attributed it to memory I guess.

I was recently asked to apply for a case manager job for hospice at this same agency. I applied online. I got an immediate email that said.. You do NOT meet the minimum qualifications for this said position. ( excuse me? I have been a case manager for over 5 years!!) I personally mailed and called the recruiter as they re-listed the same job on the website... and I never had gotten a response even as a courtesy and I did mention the employee referring me to the job... I feel like I AM NOT WORTHY at this point.

Has anyone had such an experience? Why would they conduct themselves this way? I laugh about this, but do they have a do not hire list hidden somewhere?

Do you have your BSN? Most of the application programs automatically disqualify people based on certain things. If you check 4 years of experience instead of 5 years for example, or pursuing degree rather than having one. It sounds like this company is probably not great to work for anyways.

I feel like I AM NOT WORTHY at this point.

Sounds to me like it may be the other way around. I know a job is a job but from the limited info I have, these folks sound like a joke. Drop em like they're hot and find somewhere worthy of you not the other way around.

OH MY GOD! I had to post again, sorry hospice nurses.

I finally, after hounding the recruiter who wouldn't even return my call she finally emailed me two weeks later. She told me I was not a viable candidate for a case manager position because it requires a BSN! I couldn't help but shoot back that many gifted nurses only have their ADN's. Grant it, I don't need to tell you I am 3 months or so away from my BSN. But to have this archaic mind set just blew me out of the water!!

I also emailed her and told her that it's odd, tbat just two years ago I was called in to interview there for a Team Manager position that is the one who over seas the team... and I only have my ADN, and I have management experience, yet I am NOT worthy to be considered for a lowly Hospice RN position. I couldn't help but tell her.... a higher degree does not make a better RN, sorry...

Noey 67, This archiac mind set that you refer to is the WAY IT IS in the real world. It doesn't matter where you have worked, how hard you worked or how many eons you have worked or anything else. If ya ain't got the letters it all doesn't count (many times).

I had no desire to go back to school but I am. I have come to the place where I understand that if I want to change clinical areas I've got to have the degree. Did it tick me off to be told that I wasn't qualified for a position that was filled with someone with less seniority but the right letters-Heck yes!!! I need the degree-off to school I go. I'm no spring chicken either!

However Noey, emailing her and informing her that a degree doesn't make a better nurse etc. is not the best idea. Hounding the recruiter-not the best idea either. Maybe ia BSN is a new policy with them, you have no way of knowing. You never know if at sometime in the future (if you pursue a degree) you may want to work there. Never burn bridges!

I didn't burn a bridge. Hounding was a pooor choice of words. ( my friend who is also a manager for this dept kept urging me to apply.. she knew me and would be a reference of course she urged me to keep at it until I reach a live person.. I just never got a response other than a automatic email saying I do not meet the minimum requirements! I couldn't understand that giving i just interviewed with them a few years ago for supervisory position in that same office.

I was blown away when I was told I need a BSN to grace this facility. I also know I don't want to work there as it is a pay cut!! Imagine that, requiring a higher degree... but not willing to reimburse appropriately. No thanks.

This is why one is better off getting a BSN. When you have a BSN, it robs potential employers of this ready-made excuse to reject you.

When I applied for the hospice case manager position the job posting said, "BSN or AD" degree. Well, I have neither. I am a three year diploma RN and my almost 2 yrs of experience happened a long time ago but I "went in the backdoor" as some had suggested on this site by volunteering and shadowing. When I got my state endorsement I did the clinical with this hospice. Most of the people who interviewed me knew me already and thankfully they all voted to hire me. So even if they have a certain "requirement" they can overlook it as was done in my case. I hope you find a good hospice to work for, Noey, because you sound like a super nurse who could bless many people during the end of their earthly lives.

Thank you Trixie's mom. I have a wonderful job lined up for Odyssey Hospice starting next week. I found a better, more stable employer. But I am still taken back to be told you need a BSN in order to be a hospice RN. Just how in the hell is that statistics class going to make a difference in the kind of nurse I am? Really... none. It's not the employer I wish to work for anyway. Their payscale is embarrassing.

VERY HAPPY FOR YOU, Noey67!!!! I totally agree with you about the degree requirement. Have seen great-at-their-job people have to look elsewhere in social work because they didn't have their masters. I hope this job will turn out to be the best ever for you...God bless you and the clients you will be caring for! Keep us posted on how you're doing.

I know how stressful and frustrating it can be to not hear back. I recently left a major hospital because I could not get HR to help me transfer to another, less physical unit after I underwent cervical fusion on their dollar from herniating 2 discs at work. I WANTED to stay, but just not on that unit. Weeks of calling HR, leaving messages daily. And not one call back. Nursing shortage? Hello!! I hope this new job with Odyssey fits you like a glove!

So far so good ladies. I am loving the idea of Odyssey. Lots of resources, wondeful benefits..and you'd never see them admitting a patient without consents obtained.. lol
