How to become a L&D nurse, with no experience

Published

Hello!

My name is Lindsey and I am a new grad RN, and my dream is to become a labor and delivery nurse. I currently live in Denver, Colorado, and they market is very competitive out here. I just got a job working in a rehab hospital for brain injuries and surgical patients/ trauma. I wanted to get into women's services (postpartum to start) but EVERY hospital says you need experience to get into that specialty. I am going to contact the nurse managers at some point about how to get into that specialty, but I was wondering if any of you RNs have advice about how to get into that specialty. Thanks so much!!

It depends - how much do you really want to be an OB nurse? Is that a major priority for you or are other things in your life (location, nearby family, etc.) more important?

I ask that because the way I got into L&D at a time when it was very difficult was to move across the country to a medically underserved (remote) area. They were willing to train me because it was difficult to get nurses out there.
