How to apply

Published

Hello everyone,

I am going to be graduating with my BSN this upcomming May. I want to work nights, would love to land a job in med/surg too. There is still so much school hasn't taught me, I need to start out here to be comfortable with my skills maybe 2 years down the road.

Problem is, I don't want to continue living where I currently reside. I want to move out of state. Can someone please point me in the right direction for applying to jobs outside one's current state of residence? Is it unlikely anyone would even want to hire a new grad from another state? I was hoping to find something in a rural area too, but I just don't know where to look. I've been looking online, but the pickings are slim it seems.

Any input will be greatly apprecited.

Thank you.

well, good thing for you there are still nursing shortages all over the US, another good thing you said was that you liked rural areas. But my suggestion would be look for a state or city you want to move too, then look at some online job sites, also find a place then look for local hospitals and look at their job site. As for hiring new grads from out of state? Of course they will!

Remeber, you will have to take/pass the boards for that state. Do you know what state you want to move to? If so find out the local hospitals there and visit their web-site. From there call thier Human Resources department for further information.

Thank you JHansen and smStar for the hasty replies!

I will certainly begin doing this now. I am not particular about where I end up. As long as it's the desert. I love the Southwest, and I figure I will be "me" wherever I go, meaning- new. I can be new here, where I'm not happy, or I can go be new somewhere the weather's nice.

Thanks again.

If I were you, I would start to apply as soon as they post they new grad positions (my hospital does it several months in advance) in a place you would like to work. Be granted the position (nights, Med/Surg, no problem) then take the boards in that state. We hire out of state all the time and the new grads who take the boards in their own state then transfer take much longer to start. If you are like I was, you will want to start working as soon as possible.

Yes you can find a job out of state as a new grad. I earned my BSN in Nebraska and then took my boards in Montana since that was where I wanted to go. Just remember to talk to the BON in advance so you have all the paperwork they require when it's time for boards. good luck.

Hi Husker,

I want to go to NM, and where I live now there is an agreement between certain states, like CO, NM, AZ and UT I believe, where you don't have to take another test- you liscense transfers over.

I guess it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and start applying online. I won't graduate until May, but at least they'll know I'm determined and very interested.
