Houston-L&D nurses

Published

I am graduating in May 08 and am very intrested in L&D. I am starting to get everything together for the application process and was wondering what you guys thought of as far as best/worst places to work in the houston area on an L&D unit, where should I apply?

Thanks for any advice you may have good or bad!!!

Specializes in ER, Infusion therapy, Oncology.

The choices are unlimited in the Houston area. There are several very large hospital systems and some smaller ones and most have very good women's services. A lot of it depends on which side of town you live in.

Specializes in L&D, mother/baby, antepartum.

I work at Memorial Hermann in the Medical Center and I absolutely love it. The only catch is, if you are hired at that location for women's health, you have to work for one year on the unit before you can train for L&D (we have two floors--one for L&D and ante and the other for PP--you can still work Ante in the first year, just not labor). I had prior PP and Ante experience and I still have to wait a year to train. I don't mind though because we have VERY high acuity pt's and I'm learning a lot. Aside from Ben Taub, I doubt there is any hospital in the area where you will be assigned to assist with care of antepartum pts in the ICUs (and yes, we sometimes labor them there). The nurses I work with are top notch and are very helpful and friendly. It's the best teamwork environment I've ever encountered. At TMC you have to start nights and get on the list for days. I personally like nights, but there are plenty of people waiting for days right now. If you'd like more info, feel free to PM me. I'm partial to Hermann but I'm sure there are others out there that may say different.

The womans hospital of texas is a GREAT place to work! I've been there for 8 months now and absolutely love it! I would highly recommend applying there! We deliver over 9,000 babies a year. If you want to learn L&D Woman's is a great place to learn it!
