I'm looking to work for a Med Center hospital, preferably one that could help out with nursing school. People have suggested MD Anderson and St Luke's. Any others? I've had it with nursing homes.
I've been trying for over a year to get into MD Anderson, as it's one of the few that doesn't require (just prefers) previous hospital experience. Any advice on getting in? I've tried visiting the offices, submitting resumes in person, and making phone calls.

Houston Hospitals are hard to get into period! I had trouble getting a job in one when I first moved here, and I live 5 miles from the med center. It would have been the perfect job!
I t hink you are doing the right thing with following up, etc. Do you have any hospital experience yet (with clinicals)? Or, have you started nursing school yet?
I would have to say just keep following up, keep letting them know you are very interested in working for them, etc. Let them know you are willing to learn, and you are a nursing student who would be interested in working for their hospital after graduation.
Good luck!
Sadly, no hospital experience of clinical work. I'm currently taking Pharmacology at HCC and hoping that i'll get into the nursing program this fall. Thanks for the encouragement. My friend who hasn't even completed the pre-nursing prereqs got a job at MD Anderson, courtesy of her powerful mom. I'm trying to ride some coattails here. Wish me luck.

Do you have your CNA certification and is it current?
Maybe once you get into the nursing program too things will be different - employers love nursing students.
There are many hospitals right by MD Anderson - have you tried Shriners, TCH, Herman Memorial, St Lukes??
Good luck, and let us know how it goes - I do know how frustrating this is for you.

Yes, I am certified and up to date (I got my license on the day of Houston's Katrina evacuations). Shriner's requires past hospital experience. I'm also looking into HCHD like Ben Taub, but I have friends who work there and tell me to stay far away. I'm applying to MD Anderson, St Luke's, Memorial Hermann, TCH, and any other branches. I'm also applying to HCHD. Should I be scared of horror stories that I've heard?
Thank you so much.

What horror stories have you heard about Ben Taub? We've (we=nursing students in our clincal) have had clinicals there and generally had a good experience. However, this may be totally different from a CNA working there (which is what you are looking for) vs. nursing student, and of course things may differ depending on the floor.
As for Methodist, I know someone who works there as a nursing assistant, and while he says it is a lot of work, he did mention that he felt that overall they took care of their employees.
My friend works as a CNA in ICU at Ben Taub and tells me of horrible staff ratios.
