Housing in Anchorage, Alaska ?

I want to get opinions about housing that is provided in Anchorage, Alaska.

Does your company provide apartment for housing, or older home? I am traveling alone and prefer to have a gated apartment community however, I have been told it is hard to find short term leases for apartments in Anchorage, and my company housing coordinator states that they usually use private housing through Realtor or private owners. Even though I found one in one phone call. Their response is we have been doing this for years and have never had one nurse complain about housing. Really, never, not one??? Thats a pretty good track record, since it is older housing.

Anytime an agency says never one nurse has ever complained about anything it is rude and dismissive, and almost always a lie. I have no idea how one should reply to such a statement, perhaps someone else with better PR skills can make a suggestion.

To your main concern, if the agency cannot or will not provide housing that meets your needs, you can either take the stipend and do it yourself, or find another agency. As an in between solution, ask them if you can talk to someone in the same housing they provide to get the traveler point of view. I've never done that with housing as I usually get my own (especially now that I'm my own employer), but I did ask for such a conversation in my beginning travel year (about the working conditions, not housing).
