Do most nurses only work 32 hours a week? I am a nursing student and keep getting mixed messages. Just wondering if they worked that or 40 hours a week?

I started laughing when I saw the post on how many hours we work. I currently work 40 hours 8-4 M-F attending school with a teenager with medical needs, Plus I work every other weekend at a nursing home - usually 8 hour shifts, sometimes I work an occasional double. Then I also have a job at a local pizza restaurant for about an additional 10 hours a week in the evenings because my teenage daughter thought it would be fun to work with her mom at the mall!!

I don't know about 32 hours, but there are MANY nurses that work 36 hours a week - three 12 hour shifts. If you're basing your career decisions on money, do not be a nurse. A lot of the people who go into nursing just for the money or job security either quit or hate their jobs. You have to WANT to be nurse.

Gompers you are so right! Sometimes I think to myself "And they PAY me for this!" I love my job. I think the pay is great, as a matter of fact they started me out $6/hour more than what I asked for on my application.
