Hi, I’d love to hear from any certified NICU nurses approximately how many hours they spent studying in preparation for the exam? I’m trying to get a ballpark figure to use as a starting point for budgeting to get nurses certified. Thanks so much!

It's going to vary so much from nurse to nurse. I went through the whole AWHONN NOEP program before I tested, just to dot my Is and cross my Ts, but I've been working in level 3-4 units for 10+ years and honestly could have just winged the exam and been fine. A newer nurse is going to need a lot more study time.

Most needed 4 months study plus attended conf of 3 days with one of the authors of the Core Curriculum manual, and most had over 5-10 years experience. Now they have classes geared to prepare for exam given by employer, and a test manual for each chapter. You need to know every single chapter and be able to answer the questions. It is wonderful addition to your learning to be a NICU nurse, makes working more interesting. The pay for certification was a nice benefit at years end.
