HOURS of Nursing Jobs

Quick thing to check - go to a few local hospitals' websites. They probably have available jobs listed online (although they probably will not list a pay rate), with qualifications including level of schooling and any relevant necessary experience. See if all the new grad shifts are nights or rotating. I know that in my area you can work days right off the bat, but they are usually 7a-7p and there is no guarantee of weekends off. Are you willing to compromise? 3 shifts week is usually full time, and you could probably talk management into generally having Sundays off if you're really religious. Would you be able to miss a Monday or a Saturday here and there? One nice thing about nursing is that it's really flexible, because it's a 24 hour job. One bad thing about it is that it's a 24 hour job, and sometimes we all have to work when we don't want to. Also - have you thought about the fact that you WILL have to work some religious holidays? At most places, it's either work the eve or the day, or work the whole holiday every other year. You may want to think through all of this before you invest time and money in the education.

I would first check into what positions they are offering in your area. Some larger areas offer weekends off (or weekends on for more pay). You may consider working 11-7 shift. If it's your weekend to work, you can always sleep after church, and it would leave you free evenings for your services through the week. Plus, if they do self scheduling it may be that you can work around some of your obligations.

There are very few jobs in nursing that are going to give you ideal hours. If there are, then they are going to be hard to come by, especially for a new grad. When you become a nurse, you are pretty well assured that you are going to work the odd hours, no matter how long you've been in nursing. Sometimes you have to set priorities and decide what you are willing to live with, and what you aren't.

There are some units........like the ER, that offer 8 hour shifts......you could do 7-3...... or if you worked where they do self scheduling.......you can do your three 12 hour shifts that aren't on your meeting days and the weekends on you could do like 3pm -3am.............

I work at a surgery center and the hours are pretty much 6:30am-3pm (M-F). I've been an RN for 2 years, and was an LVN for 8 years. I don't think you could get in as new grad, but after you get some experience, you want to try it. The pay is good, although I know the hospital nurses in the area make a bit more (but not that much more!).

I'm seriously considering pursuing a BSN. Yet, my church is very important to me and we have meetings on monday nights, thursday nights, and on saturday and sunday mornings. Are there nursing jobs available that pay well that work regular monday to friday 7-3 shifts? And if so, how much do they pay. I live in the New Haven, CT area by the way, if that helps. Thanks in advance!

Hi Googs - welcome to all nurses. I'm also involved in my church. I found that as a student I missed some meetings and then as a new grad it was hard to find a job that didn't require you to work every other or every third weekend (I ended up on working every other Sunday evening.... Hospitals usually are glad to have folks who will do the evening and night shifts. If you find a hospital that has "self scheduling" you may be able to schedule yourself around your church times, or if you are willing to work part time perhaps you will find a job that won't require weekends.

I am wondering if you have thought about the kind of nursing you want to do. Of course, hours and pay are important but most nurses have a plan for the type and kind of nursing you want to do and then hours and pay kind of fall in place after you know what you are looking for as a nurse.
