4 hours hang time vs 4 hours out of bank?

I'm curious as to your hospital policy on blood administration.

Does the four-hour window of administration time start when you pick up the PRBCs at the blood bank, or when you actually spike the bag?

Our hospital policy is four hours from the blood bank (lab).

While we no longer hang blood at our unit (but we USED to), it was always 4 hrs. from pick-up at the bank. All I've ever heard or read or been taught was the same.

Hadn't hung blood for a few weeks until yesterday. I had two units up at the same time (different patients). Our policy says, 15 minutes from BB to hang, and four hours to complete. VS @ pre, 15 min, and every hour thereafter until complete then one more set for "kicks and giggles" :chuckle

Everywhere I've ever worked, the policy has been that the clock starts running when the blood leaves the blood bank (which is why you have everything set up and ready to go before you pick up the blood).

I agree that once the blood leaves the temperature controlled setting of the blood bank, the clock starts running.
