12 hour shifts

Published

I was wondering about nurses that work 12 hour shifts, are you actually at work for 12 hours and get paid for 12 hours, or do you take an unpaid luchbreak that would make you be there for more than 12 hours. Also, I was wondering from some people with experience working both 12 and 8 hour shifts, which one you prefer. and what time do each of the shifts start and end for a day shift, or a night shift nurse. Thanks:wink2:

I currently work 4 10 hour days in a PACU. I have worked lots of 12 hr shifts in the past & prefer them to any other. The extra time off during the week opens up opportunities to do leisure activities or take classes, etc. I have worked 12s in EDs, PACUs & ICUs. The varying shifts I have worked include 6a-6p, 7a-7p, 11a-11p, noon-mn. My wife has worked in a unit that had 5-5 12 hr shifts.

The 12s can be long & tiring, but are well worth it for the extra time off.

The miracle is not that I finished, but that I had the courage to start.

We work 7-7:30 (days or nights) giving us the half hour for lunch (unpaid) and we use the half hour for report at the end of the shift.

I just moved, but was working 0545-1815. ICU/tele 0645-1915 and OB 0345-1615 (I think that would kill me:)

Specializes in ICU.
Just Wondering

I have worked many different jobs in my life, but nursing is the only on I've found where lunch is "unpaid". Why is that? Anyone?:uhoh3:

I work in marketing - corporate environment. Lunch has always been unpaid. When I've been in salaried positions, I was expected to be at work 8 - 5 or 9 - 6 with a 1 hour break for lunch (that's 8 paid hours). Plus, any overtime you need to put in to get your job done is usually unpaid.

I'm consulting now, and I only bill for the hours I work. Whether I take lunch or not is on my own unpaid time.

Hi I'm a new member on this site, and I'm a Filipino nurse in UK.At present I am working in a nursing home and sometimes we usually do long day shift and long day for us is 14 hours duty and that is from 7 am to 9 pm and of course a half hour break which is unpaid. But then again we have this no work no pay policy so we actually don't have a choice. That is why im contemplating of transferring to a hospital at least benefits wise it would be good. What do you think guys?

welll I work 6:45AM-715PM and they take 1/2 hour out plus we get 2 15 min breaks. I am lucky to take a full half hour lunch 1x a month and I never get my 15 min breaks
