Hello,
I start my nursing program in exactly a month and I received my schedule today.
Every Thursday I have Comprehensive Pharmacology from 9-3.
I've never sat in ONE class for such a long period of time, it's almost kind of daunting to think about.
I was wondering if there were any tips for staying engaged in class and being as successful as possible. How were you an active learner in your class?
I'm sorry if this has been asked before I tried looking through old threads but most of them were about studying outside of school not necessarily about when you're in class.
Thank you in advance, and any other tips are welcomed.
I have 7 hours of lecture every Tuesday and Wednesday. We get breaks and I have to have snacks and my caffeine. It's not easy but not terrible either. You do what you gotta do. I make sure I walk around on my breaks. Whether it's a quick trip around the school or maybe to outside to get a fresh breath of air.
This is pretty normal. I have noticed that the programs that split the program into different classes tend to have shorter lecture (but not always) and the programs that have one general class per semester that encompass multiple subjects seem to usually have longer lecture. My ADN program does not separate out pharmacology or research or any of those nursing classes. Instead we take NUR 151 for block one that is a 10 unit class, and now in block two I have NUR 171 that is an 8 unit class. My classes for block one were theory from 8-12:30 and lab from 8-2:45 (lab was mostly lecture as well). Now for block two I have lecture from 8-2 and lab from 8-12:30. On separate days of course. The lectures encompass patho, pharm, med math, EBP, and then the various systems and such. I actually dont mind the long lectures. Its nice to not have to cut off somewhere in the middle and pick up later in the week. I just bring a green tea and some sort of snack with me, and we are given hourly breaks and a 30 minute lunch break on the 6 hour day. My instructors are very engaging though, and they do activities in the class that help us to keep focus and still effectively learn. I will admit there are some dry days where the lecture is just droll and it is harder to focus for a long time, but thats not the norm. Hopefully you have some engaging instructors as well.
Oh, and i third (or fourth or whatever lol) sitting towards the front. I tend to lose focus in the back and start fiddling with my phone or wahtever. When in the front, I tend to focus better and listen and take notes well. Something about knowing the instructor can see everything I do keeps me focused. Also you can hear them better, see better, if they do a demo you can see that better. All around, the front is better. And as anecdotal evidence to the benefits of sitting in the front, we started with 90 students last semester, by the end, our class lost about 35-40 students. The majority of those students were from the back of the class.

Honestly if it was my choice I would rather meet twice a week and have a 3 hour class but that's the schedule that was given to me so I suppose I'll find a way to survive, haha.
Thank you so much for your responses, I'll be sure to bring healthy snacks to munch on, some water and actively take notes and so on and so forth.
Seems daunting but I feel more reassured now, obviously it can't be TOO bad if there are those before me who have survived, lol.
I will definitely be referencing this when my first day jitters make their appearance.
Again, thank you. :)
