Hospitals offering NICU new grad RN internships?

Published

I would LOVE to start my nursing career in the NICU and will move anywhere in the country to pursue my goal. I'm just curious which hospitals offer new grad internships in the NICU. I have already applied to several in Texas and have used Indeed.com to research different hospitals, but I would really like to start in a Level III NICU that has a formal new grad internship. Any help with my search would be greatly appreciated!

I'm pretty sure there are other threads on here with exactly that topic, of the top of my head though my hospital has one, I just got off 5 weeks ago. Children's National in DC. If you graduate this coming May though they have already filled all their NICU spots for next year (starting in August)

You are right....there are a lot of topics with the exact same question being asked. I just wanted to cover all my bases and not leave any hospitals out, especially since it seems to be so difficult finding specialty positions as a new grad. I figured things changed from semester to semester, so might as well get some help from the experts!

I would have loved to apply for Children's National, but I guess I missed the deadline. Do they only offer internships in August??

For new grads in the NICU? yes only in August, they may have other start dates in other areas of the hospital but I really don't know. Our manager told us in early December that already the spaces had been filled. When I applied last year I applied in December and was hired in January which I thought was early but apparently she's trying to get it done earlier and earlier each year.

It still probably won't hurt to check out their website/listings. You never know when people will drop out at the last minute

Specializes in NICU.

In general, all pediatric hospitals have a new-grad program and those are some of the best places you can go since there are high-acuity patients with unique diagnoses. Try looking up the U.S. News and World Report for the best peds hospitals and work your way down the list applying.

I'd strongly suggest talking to the nurse recruiter over the phone and the NICU manager if possible as you're more likely to get better answers that way.

Good luck!

Specializes in ICU, NICU.

Children's Hospital Los Angeles and Children's Medical Center of Dallas as well as Parkland in Dallas all have internship programs in NICU :)

Where did you apply in Texas?

Specializes in Still a medic at heart but ICU, M/S, SVU.

Tacoma General in Tacoma Washington. I just got into their residency program starting August and I'm a new grad. I did apply for the intermediate care nursery internship but they wanted to hire me for the Level III instead. I'm moving across country btw. I'm from New Hampshire. Good luck!!
