Hospital Scholarships

Hi everyone, I'm getting ready to start my first semester of nursing school at RSU. While I'm excited I am nervous as well. I was looking into scholarships for the spring and following semester and ran across hospital scholarships. I was wondering if anyone has used them. I noticed for every semester they help fund you work for them for six months. Has anyone had a bad experience.. like they pay you less or don't get to work in the area of your choice.
Next question: Is there a difference between the amount they help you. I know on St. John's website they say they will cover 1500. but Saint Francis doesn't mention an amount.

I recently got my first scholarship check from SJ. Because I will be starting my second year of ns in Aug, I got the 3,500 this time ( for fall and spring) and I will get the remainder in May when I graduate. ALso, you don't have to pay the taxes on it- they do ( it's in the contract!). As you already know, there is a two year work agreement along with it. As far as what area you will work in after you graduate, the scholarship person (in human resources) and the actual job you take has nothing to do with each other. It just depends on what jobs are open at the time just like it would be if you were apply for a job without a two year commitment. I've been told that if there is a certain area that you are interested in , you could extern there during your schooling and have a real good chance of getting hired in that area. That is what I am doing now. You get to know the staff and managers and see if that is the area that you really like- with no work commitment! Anyway, I'm just going on and on. I hope this helps.

Thanks Kim that helps alot! I've noticed alot of people talk alot on this board about S.J., but not alot of people talk about St. Francis. I just don't know alot about S.J., all of family usually goes to S.F., but I will definetly look into it.

Kim-Would you mind telling me how you went about getting a scholarship for st Johns? Do you have to be working for them in order to get one, I thought you did last time I checked, but I figured it couldnt hurt to check again! :) I am going into my second semester this fall and I definitely need all the financial help I can get and St. Johns is definitely where I plan on working after graduation, so I have no problem signing a 2 year contract with them, any info at all you could give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I got an application when they brought lunch at our school one time. You used to be able to download it from their site- I just checked and didn't see it there anymore. You need to call "Julie' in human resources- she handles the scholarships. Or better yet, just go down there and get an application. You will need a copy of you most recent transcripts and I think two letters of recommendations. That's pretty much it. It's real easy- I must warn you that Julie seemed a little overwhelmed and she took some time processing mine. I would stay right on top of it and she will get it rolling faster. You don't have to be an employee there to get the scholarships. I am not working there- but I am externing there this summer. Hope this helps.

I have considered both hospitals as well. I made my final decision this spring because I have done clinicals at both SF and SJ. I had good experiences at both- however SJ staff just seemed to fit me better. They are both good places to work and have many benefits.
