Hospital Help - Moving to Texas and need Feedback!

Hey! The subject says it - I'll be moving to texas next week... I'll be in Longview first... Here's what I need... I'm looking for a good hospital - decent pay, benefits, and sign on bonus/relo assistance if possible...

Looking in east Dallas or north side of Austin areas... My ex moved to the longview area with my little girl and I'd like to stay within a two hour driving distance.

I'm a NICU nurse with over 13 months of experience... but I'd like to find a day job - would consider changing specialties... where would i have a better chance of finding a day surgery or something with decent hours?? I have a compact license so there's no problem with working right away...

Any help with hospitals is appreciated. I'd also be open to pediatric or high risk newborn home health...

Are you wanting to work in Longview for a while or are you wanting to start in Dallas/Austin? Austin is more than 2 hours from Longview. Dallas is close to 2 hrs.

would consider Austin - it's about 3 hours... still close enough for me though.

Ok well... there are two hospitals in Longview. One is Good Shepherd Medical Center. I am a new grad so I only know what they offer for NG. They offer 4000.00 sign on bonus and a 1500.00 relocation for new grads. I am sure they offer something to experienced RNs. The pay for a new grad is about 22.00 hr. plus a few dollars for BSN. Of course, pay increases once you become a RN. They have a position open in NICU but it is nights. They have numerous day time openings. The other hospital here is Longview Regional Hospital. This is a private hospital. I have no idea if they offer a sign-on bonus etc.... because they only release that info when you interview with them. They do not have a high turnover of RNs and I have heard that it is a very good place to work. Both have websites that you can check out.

I live in Longview so I don't know alot about Dallas/Houston hospitals. I know that Children's Medical Center is an awesome hosptial (know from personal experience) and I have heard that the pay is good.

I moved from East Texas to Austin 25 years ago, and I regularly make the drive back to East Texas. You'll spend more than 3 hours on the road to get to Austin, probably more like 4.5 to 5 hours.

Also, the pay in Longview is the same as it is in Austin, but the cost of living is much higher here (Austin's cost of living is, and has always been, a bit higher than other cities in Texas). The job market here isn't great either. Our two major hospitals have hiring freezes, and I've heard several people say they've had to take jobs in San Antonio because they couldn't find one in Austin.

Whatever you decide, good luck!

Hello,

I am interested in Good Shepherd Medical Center. If you could please tell me when the GN program starts. I am from NJ and I have been looking for a job since march. I completed school in december 2008 and passed the boards in february 26th. Or if you can also tell me about any other hospitals that might be hiring new graduates. Thanks alot.

Hi! Could you (or anyone else who might have the answer) tell me if Good Shepherd requires a contract/work commitment for new grads getting into the internship programs? I was looking at their careers webpage and noticed that the OB internship has a work commitment but the others do not have that listed. Was wondering if the commitment applied to all the units and that info was just not included.

Thank you!
