Hospital gear: scrubs, compression socks, shoes, etc

Published

Please let me know some of your favorite hospital gear/apparel, such as scrub brands, most comfortable shoes, compression socks yes or no? stethoscope brands? and anything else you can think of that has helped you feel comfortable throughout a 12 hour shift..

My favorite brand of scrubs is Dickies, because they last FOREVER - very good stitching. I also like Purple Label by Healing Hands, just for the fit (I'm 5'1, 115 lbs, so most scrubs hang on me and drag the floor). I love my Klogs shoes. I also wear Merrell Jungle Moc's . -very light with good support. But these things will very much be up to personal preference - going to your local uniform store and trying on some different things (even if you later order them online) will be most helpful.

I order compression hose from Amazon - SB sox are pricy, but mine have lasted for years without loosing their compression. I loveee them!

I have the Littmann Lightweight II S.E. stethoscope - it runs about $60. It works very well for general nursing assessments. I've tested it against other brands, and it picks up more sounds than the cheaper ones I've tried....though most any cheapo-stethoscope will do for a BP or simple auscultation.

'Pro Compression' compression socks. Can't work a day without them. They're on Facebook.

Cherokee and Dress-A-Med are the scrub tops that fit a short (5'4), bulky guy like myself. Every other brand always has a scrub top that fits perfectly everywhere, but is just too long for my shortness. I love my Grey's Anatomy pants because they're soft, comfy, and have plenty of pockets. They're a tad long, but that's because I'm short but the ending of the pants kinda stack on each other on your shoes so you don't really notice them either. I've had my eye on Figs for awhile and they look clean, professional, but are a bit too pricey. Some day I will try them.

There have been a few instances where I actually have worn my compression knee sleeves (I use the tight, thick ones for weightlifting) because my "leg day" gym session earlier that day was rough and the sleeves have alleviated a lot of the soreness during the 12-hour shift. I've never tried compression socks nor do I feel the need to use them. If you're a person that gets hot easily, I highly recommend wearing dri-fit type of undershirt. Always keeps me cool throughout my shift and I don't get sweat pits as often either heh.

Shoes are really just personal preference. I'm a Nike guy, so most of my gym/running/work shoes are Nike, with the exception of my one pair of Adidas Ultraboosts. Those are freaking amazing and I would never waste their use at work haha.
