Hospice Aide Work

I am thinking of applying to a local hospice center as a CNA. Could someone describe for me the typical work of a CNA in a hospice home? Or experiences they have had as a CNA there? Thanks!

It really depends on where you work. I am not an aide so I cannot speak from experience, but I can tell you that our aides do similar work to what you would do in a nursing home or in the hospital, however the environment is much better and you can spend more time with your patients. Ours is an acute care facility - not a residential hospice facility. Many of the patients are incontinent, so you would more than likely be doing incontinence care and baths. Our aides provide a great deal of comfort for our patients and spend a great deal of time with them.

i am currently an aide for an indpls hospice company. the pay is great and the stress level is a little lower than ltc. typically i start at 8:30am by visiting a home pt and go from there. i usually spend an hour to an hour and a half with each pt, whether at home or in a facility. i usually see 6-8 pts a day and give them showers, baths, feed meals or just talk or play games with them. it is nice because i can spend one on one time with all of my pts, because i know that the pts in facilities cannot get one on one care. (not facilities fault, too little staff for pts) i always say, "if i get a smile out of a pt, i have done my job for the day!"
