Hopping the pond TO the UK?

Hi everyone,

I am a nurse here in the States and my husband has been told he has a job in Surrey if he wants it. We are avid travellers and this is his dream job. However, I only hold a 2 year nursing degree along w/ my 4 year Bachelors in Science. I read the NMC website and it says they compare your education and if you come up short you are considered under the "2nd general systems directive". You can make up that difference w/ supervision for a time period and/or an aptitude test.

Is this the case? I would be happy to move as long as I could get a nursing job out there. I understand nursing in the UK is different however I am more concerned if even getting a job out there is feasible. Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, what is Surrey like (I have only been to London)?

To be honest I would approach hospitals in the area you are looking to be living, jobs are very hard to come by especially in current climate where newly qualified are struggling to find work and even experienced nurses are struggling to find work.

I wish you well but would suggest going through the NMC first and see where you are short an what you need to do to make up, even then may be hard to find a hospital willing to support you whilst you meet the criteria and may be easier making the hours up whilst still in the US

You might want to try HCA which is an American owned group of hospitals in London, they are actively recruiting at the moment. I have noticed that the number of nursing jobs are on the rise again, despite the fact new nurses here are finding it hard to find jobs. Jobs in the London area are always available.
