Honor Societies for Students

Published

Are there any other societies out there available to nursing students other than Sigma Theta Tau? Unfortunately my GPA is only a 3.11 so I am not eligible to become a member of Sigma Theta Tau. Thanks in advance.

Undergraduate Student - Junior or senior students enrolled in baccalaureate programs at accredited institutions of higher education who have completed at least 1/2 of the nursing curriculum, rank in the upper 35 percent of their graduating class and have achieved academic excellence (at schools where a 4.0 grade point average system is used, this equates to at least a 3.0)

I got that directly from the web site. How do you not fit their criteria if you have a 3.11?

Is your school associated with the international honor society, Gold Star?

It doesn't say you qualify if you have above a 3.0 GPA, it says that you have to rank in the upper 35% of the class (I see they've lowered their standards; it used to be the top 25%), but have no lower than a 3.0 GPA. With all the grade inflation in so many nursing programs these days, it's entirely possible to have a 3.11 GPA but not rank in the top 35% of the class. I'm guessing that's probably the OP's situation.

I thought that may be what she was talking about, but since she only mentioned her GPA and not her class rank, I thought it was possible that she thought she had to have a higher GPA. But yes, that may be the situation.

Thank you for the replies. I guess it wouldn't hurt for me to find out where I rank in the class. I am going to write to my school's representative to see where I rank. I only have two semester's left before I graduate so I do not think it will be possible for me to get myself in the top 35% of my class but it won't hurt to check.

Oh, and I am not offended but just for the record I am male =).

Thanks,

Joe

I am so sorry! I was just in a hurry to reply and din't bother looking :)

Do not be sorry, it is okay. :)

yes, ranking will help you figure it out... but you also can't join, you have to be invited by your school's chapter.

but as far as other HONORS SOCIETIES, your school may have a non-specific one (phi kappa phi) or there are other nursing organizations such as ATD - Alpha Tau Delta, and the National Student Nurses Association - NSNA.

Good luck!
