I have a family member who is talking about going down there to work on some organic farm for about 6 months or so. I see the area on different sites on the net and it looks like a beautiful place. She is just 21 (stepdaughter) and she says she is heading there but is also being tightlipped about it. She has several mental health issues/huge mess.
Does anyone live around there, know anything about the area related to safety, culture and about any organic farms?

I grew up in Homestead Fla. They do have alot of farms there, I don't know about organic. The farms there are strawberry, cucumbers, beans and tomatoes. About safety, Homestead is like any place else you have your good area and your nots so good. You stated that she has mental issue, in Homestead there is a mental and health clinic called the "Martin Luther King "clinic located on W. Mowry st. About culture the state of Florida is a melting pot, homestead is no different. Theres people of all decsent such a mexicans, cubans, puetro ricans, hatians, dominicans, whites and blacks. They have a good public transportation system there. Theres a hospital in the area called Homestead Hospital. Many apartment area as well as homes. Theres a community college there, alot of shops and stores. Its a thriving neighbohood. I hope I answered your question.
Oh and I forgot to mention they do have alot of plant nursery as well. Theres an area called the redland that full of nursery and they may have organic farms.

It is best to have a working knowledge of medical Spanish.
I really haven't been to Homestead, since the aftermath of Andrew, and it wasn't in good shape then.
Plant City (between Tampa - Polk County ) has alot of farming. I usually go out and pick at the Upick fields every Spring so that Mama and I can homecan some vegetables, if I am in the area. That or she buys several bushels of peas, tomatoes for canning and some fresh okra for ready use. That and put up preserves, mostly Strawberry. My sister and I used to pick for the tourists and make some money, when we were younger.
The Strawberry festival should be coming up, along with Citrus Festival in Winter Haven.
Wow thanks everyone I appreciate the information. The clinic information was good. I emailed the chamber and am waiting for a reply. I just want to be sure that the place is legitimate and somewhat safe for her, she needs the transportation and mental health care.

Yeah, I grew up in Homestead as well. The area is up and growing with a lot of land being developed into residential areas with townhomes and single family homes. Its an up and growing area and a lot of people from miami are moving there b/c Miami is too congested. Like someone said earlier, like any other area, it has it's good and bad areas.
