Hello all...I am a 7 yr RN (6 in home care). I had rather terrible start, failing two hospital orientations that just didn't work out. I went into home care and excelled. I loved the field but had to leave after injuries which desked me for almost 2 years. I have been managing a home health intake department since the injuries, and now I am completely rehabbed from the injuries.

I am thinking of returning to try my hand again in the hospital. I need the 12 hrs so I can mix schedules with wife whom is also a RN in order to homeschool our kiddos. I just can't seem to get my foot in the door. I make approx 80K but could cut down to about 74K,and live within travel distance of NYC. Any and all comments and suggestions welcome.

HH is most definitely a very different beast than the hospital! While HH has it's own set of unique challenges, it is definitely a slower pace (usually) than the hospital. I guess the biggest thing is to honestly analyze WHY your early attempts at hospital nursing did not work out for you...and then figure out if you have changed/matured or have gotten to a place where you can adapt to the busy, ever changing environment of the hospital. If it was the preceptor/unit/etc than there may not be any unresolved issues. If your time management, assessment skills, etc were the issue and if that factor has been worked out, than another shot at it would be good. But if not, then figure out what you need to do to be prepared and work on it before trying again. Either way it will be a big adjustment! Hopefully I made some sense with this  I personally can "do" hospital nursing but I "love" HH nursing. Good luck to you!

I'm near NYC as well. I work in a hospital in a busy ED. I don't make anywhere near $74,000. Might want to hang tight in HH.

I have more time at home with kids working in HH than I ever did with 3 12's in the hospital. Plus, I'm not exhausted all the time. Just my opinion.

haha...yep. ;)

I'd definately do some research before jumping right in. Far less stress in HH, imo. And while you might be home more, I'm sure your kids don't want a stressed out, worn out Daddy, either !

Give it some serious thought.. do your homework. :)
