Hello, I have been an RN for 13 years and in homehealth for 4 of those years. I just began a QA/Education Coordinator position 4 months ago. They have little to no orientation program for their staff. :o I need to develop a good program for new hires. Will you give me your ideas and what you felt that you needed the most when you became a home health nurse?

1) General orientation for everyone

a) introduce important people and have them speak to the new hires.

b) review of facilities goals

c) tour of facility

d) further explaination or review of benefits, vacation, scheduling, etc.

e) open question and answer.

2) Specific orientation to their job (example nursing)

a) procedures

b) protocol

c) charting review

d) medication

e) patient safety

f) ergonomics

g) anything else that you may think needs to be reviewed (because you may be hiring new grads and this will make them a lot more comfortable, plus review for more experienced nurses can't hurt either).

h) restraint use

i) IVs

j) open question and answer

3) Let them stay in orientation until they feel comfortable, by this I mean if they are starting out on the floor, let them be with their preceptor until they feel they can handle their patients on their own.

Well, i hope this helps.

OASIS education is on the CMS web site. It's long and boring, but good OASIS education.
