Home Dialysis Nursing - what is it

Hello everyone,

I have been asked to do some research with home dialysis nurses. Are home dialysis nurses simply the nurses who train patients at the dialysis facilities? Does each company have their own set of home dialysis nurses or does everyone train the home dialysis patients? Any light you can shed would be helpful in describing this role. Thanks.

Davita do Home Hemo and our charge nurse is leaving us to start doing the training. Home Hemo nurses train and teach patients how to do their own dialysis at home, using new modern dialysis machines like the NxStage. This is great for patients who can be easily taught and who can be responsible for retaining complex information and be organized and hygenic. It can benefit those who still work as they can fit it in with their schedule rather than sit in a clinic three times a week.

Fresenius has home hemodialysis program. But these patients are residents of nursing home (which is home for the patients), and most of them can not be trained/or do not have trainable parter to do their dialysis at their own homes. These are staff assisted programs, the tech and the nurse are the partners of the patients. The basic concept is to provide a better quality of life to nursing home residents requiring dialysis. They save their time and energy by cutting the commute to dialysis clinics. It increases comfort and compliance.

I live in central IL and we have three companies that provide home hemo. The nurses' role is limited to training the pt and his partner and then basically monitors things from afar. It is a very independent operation and the nurse is not usually involved on a day to day basis.
