Nurses Job Hunt

Hello to all!

I've never really posted messages on here but I've been an avid reader...

I live in NY and graduated nursing school with my ADN almost a year ago. I have been actively looking for a job since then, with no luck:(

BUT...I just got offered a position at one of the top homecare agencies. And it's a great position for a new grad like me since they work with you and train you before going out on your own.

I'm not sure I will take the position though. What concerns me are the locations and neighborhoods I may need to go to...I will be on my own in unknown and in possibly unsafe settings. If I am asked to go to an unsafe neighborhood, I will likely decline.

Any homecare nurses out there have any info on this?

Homecare has never been something I ever thought about but with it being so hard to get a nursing job these days, I do not want to give it up- especially since I don't know when I will get another position.

as a new grad, i was able to get a home care job through connections and an agency. they said they would call me when they would have a case and assign me.

But they only had private duty nursing assignments available to me as a new grad.

I looked harder and talked to everyone and eventually landed a job in a SNF instead.

If home care agency is your only option right now, take it. If you are just doing home health visits vs private duty nursing of staying in someone's house for 8-12 hour shifts I would feel more unsafe in the latter situation.

But with home health visits, you can put prioritizing, time management, honed in assessment skills, and excellent patient education teaching skills on your resume. So go for it! and remember. YOU are your number one priority regarding safety. If you are not safe advocate for yourself and let the agency know, bring mace with you, 911 on your phone ready to be called. find out the protocols for how to handle entering a situation in which you feel unsafe.

good for you, it's hard to find a job right now, so accept what is offered for you, then change from there.
