Nursing Students School Programs

Anyone accepted for the Spring '18 start, for the second degree BSN program? I was hoping to connect with some future classmates through this! I got the invitation for orientation today, so things are becoming real. Hopefully someone is out there! haha.

Hi all. I also got accepted to the summer cohort 9 and decided to go HFU. It was great meeting future classmates at orientation. I know some of you are looking for places and I do own a place in S/SW philly but the commute is too far to Newtown. It's not even beneficial to share the rooms with me there lol. So im thinking of renting out the place and move in with my sister in NJ. But if anyone know someone looking for a place in philly let me know.

Has anyone done their clearances yet? I can't get a doc apt until 4/19. Penn is extremely slow and a such long wait. I've scheduled it back in feb :(

Hey, I just figured it was worth mentioning that I have a couple people in my cohort that commute from South Philly (and some from even further away) and it doesn't seem like it's too bad for them. Obviously if you have the option to move closer, I'd say take it, but it is doable! Also your clearances usually don't have to be done until at least before you start Med-Surg I which is your second semester :) Just figured I'd let you know. Congrats on getting it, I'm loving the program!

Thank you. I went to orientation the other day and the commute from early morning wasn't too bad but I live by myself and it's hard on finances to pay the mortgage while I'm in school: so I'll figure to temporary renting out the place and be a freeloader from my sister :) to save some $ since I wasn't planned on working since getting a 94 seems extremely hard lol

As for textbooks, do we really need to buy them for the exams? Or can we just renting for the class since we have ATI for the exams? I saw online that ebooks cost around $10 and a textbook can range from $90-100+. But I've bought an ebook before for a class and it was so hard locating the pages and info. I guess I'm not a all tech girl. I need to real book to study I guess. Some of my nursing friends said they didn't need the text as much since they're not very helpful for taking the nclex later. But I know no one from HFU so I'm not sure if I can just rent the texts for the class. I know you just started this program and might not be able to answer my nclex questions yet ;) but thanks for any info. I know nothing much about HFU

Yes pliz I am looking for a place to rent, walking distance to holy Family University in the newton area and my school starts April 30th 2018. I am really far lol I am all the way in chicago so are u or anyone looking for a roommate I am very clean and I am not laud nor am I a party freak

Hey I've seen you asked a lot about renting a place. I live in Philly so I don't know much about Newtown either. But I do have a house that I'm thinking about temporary renting out. If by the end of April and you haven't found a place yet, I don't mind sharing the place with you if you haven't found a place yet. We can commute together if u don't have a car yet. But that could only work for the 1st 8 weeks Bc we all have the same class maybe except different lab times. I'm not sure if you were at orientation or not. But the second quarter we only have Mondays and tuesdays of class together. Clinicals we are separated by groups of 8 or less. Therefore we might not be in the same group. So a car would definitely be beneficial in the long run for you since we do not know where and when our clinical sites are. Good luck on house/apt hunting and you can have me as a backup plan if you don't mind travel far. I like like 45mins from newtown without traffics

I was wondering does it matter what editions of textbooks we buy? can we use the older editions of the textbooks?

Totally understandable, as I am a freeloader of my parents, as we speak :) Haha.

I also am not a huge fan of ebooks, I tried one for one of my pre-reqs and I hated it. The text isn't 100% necessary but our professors do point out specific tables and pages to focus on in the text, so they can be beneficial. As for sitting and reading it, page by page, it's just not feasible. I use my texts more as a reference point, since we get so much info in lecture. ATI is great as an additional tool, I wouldn't consider it something great to replace the required materials with.

I've been doing pretty well on exams by listening back to the lectures (a few classmates record them), while following along the power points, and adding some supplemental reading from the text and ATI books. It all really depends on your study style, as we're all different.

I think for Fundamentals, it's beneficial. And for Med-Surg, I think we use the same book for all three Med-Surg classes, so it's worth it in my opinion (also I got it used for like $40, in great condition). You definitely should be able to get away with renting them. And at the end of the day, the exams in our classes are set up very much like the NCLEX style of questioning, so they are doing a really good job of preparing us. They can be tricky! Haha.

Thanks Kelly for the wonderful info. You are such a great help

Hi all. I'm just starting in Cohort 9, and we have our first 204 exam next week. We didn't get our ATI testing started yet. And from the Fundamental of nursing textbook there's not much to study besides the terms and definitions. Can someone from the previous cohorts share what info or study experiences to prepare for the exams? Do I just need to do a lot of practice questions from ATI? What are the questions like? Professor Mathew seems to be kinna vague and general on what we need to study. Thanks

Can anyone tell me what time classes usually start? Is it the same start time every day? I have just been accepted for Spring 19 and I am starting to work out the details of daycare/before school care for my kids. Any insight would be helpful!

Congrats on being accepted. Your schedule will change every 8 weeks. I am in cohort 8 and we have had class the past three semesters starting at 8 AM. When you get to your second semester, clinical will start at 630 or 700 AM. Good luck!

We also had lab days twice a week for the first two semesters and we would have one day in the morning and the other would start in the afternoon. I can tell you every cohort schedule is different though. The first semester isn't so bad since you won't have clinicals yet, but yup, clinicals are typically 7a-7p, with some instructors requiring you to be there at 6:30a.

Thanks. My kindergarten daughter can go to before/after care until my husband gets home from work. But my son is only 3 and goes to prek 9-3 Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Hopefully some of our family can help us out, but it looks like I'll need a longer day care option for my son. Thank you for the info.
