It's that time of year - The HOLIDAYS!
Do you know yet if you're working? Are you OK with it? How do you handle it?
Every year, I swear I'm going to call off on Christmas. Every year, I don't. Those who do seem to not get punished but I just don't have the nerve. Unless a loved one or I am very sick or some serious tragedy occurs, I'll be at work. :angryfire:o:madface:, etc.
I really HATE the way my facility does holidays:
Nurses are scheduled M-F *OR* weekends. if the holiday falls on a normally scheduled work day, you work it. NO requirements for for PT or PRN to pick up holidays. There is no incentive for them to work at all, just regular pay. I've worked the past 3 Thanksgivings. TWO MONTHS ago I put in the request to have Thurs and Fri off. i was told I might be able to have it off if I work a day I don't work (Wed).
I put in for the Thurs/Fri before Christmas off, and told 'em I'd work Christmas eve and day, and New Year's Eve and day
we'll see how that flies
I'm Jewish, and love working Christmas! There's something so special about being there when I'm most needed, and knowing that by being there, another Nurse was able to be at home with his/her family for their celebration of their religion. That's my gift to myself!
Plus there are usually no/few elective surgeries around that time, and there's more time to talk to patients and do preventive teaching.

Leslie, I guess after this year's schedule, you'll be off for all the holidays next year??? You must have drawn the short straw...
