I am looking for the best way to do a holiday schedule for the nursing staff. Any guidelines would be most helpful

That depends on how much staff you have and what sort of staff you have (per-diem verses full time). Most places try to take the previous year into account, though ...someone who wants Christmas off this year should get it if they worked Christmas last year.

Most places I know of do every other or so many minors/so many minors a year. That depends on your staffing needs. Whatever you do it has to rotate. For instance this year I am off Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, but I work Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Next year it will reverse. That way no one can say they always have to work Christmas. Vacation days cannot be taken on holidays. However, if I can find someone who wants to work my holiday or would like to switch holidays I can do that.

We work either Thanksgiving and new years Eve or just Christmas and have off new years and Thanksgiving. No vacay allowed. And if you are off the holiday you have to work either the Eve or day after.
