Hired in ICU Full time; should i keep current place of work PRN

Hello all,

I have a bit of a dilemma. I was just hired at a Level 1 Trauma Center in ICU which I am soo excited about. However, I wanted to stay at my current job in Med/Surg PRN. The reason I am hesitating is because the training for ICU is 9 weeks long and it is didactic Mon through Fri. My current place of work just changed their PRN work requirements to 4 shifts a month from 2. I have an almost 6 month old at home, a husband, and am in school for my BSN. Should I just drop the PRN until the end of training or basically stick it out and work 6 days a week for 9 weeks?

Your short term priority should be the training for the new job- concentrate on that. You can always go per diem somewhere else if you need to later...

I have a concern, is the whole orientation 9 weeks long? If so, that is not enough time to transition from a medical/surgical unit to a level I ICU. I have previous critical care experience and received a 10 week orientation to a level I trauma ICU. I would negotiate at least a 4 month orientation maximum 6 months.

But to answer your question I would keep the job PRN, I took this trauma position and after 6 weeks decided the environment was far too toxic to continue working there. The grass is not always greener and it is nice to keep options open.
