do not hire list because of resignation during orientation

Published

About 3 years ago i resigned from a job while i was in orientation due to some emergency circumstances. I had worked for the facility for almost 3 years on another unit. I wrote a letter of resignation describing my circumstance and how I dont think it would be wise for the hospital to continue to train me. Everything went fine without any issues until recently to find out I am on their do not hire list. In the mean time, I got good reference from the manager of the unit I had worked in.

What should I do? I told my HR the circumstance now and she said she would get back to me with the information. The hospital I am looking for to be hired is a state hospital. Are they really strict with this kind of things? thanks

I am sorry you find yourself in this type of situation, but I don't believe you should hold out any hope for a reversal. There are significant legal implications if an organization makes any 'exceptions' to an HR policy, no matter what the reason. Granting any exceptions 'opens the door' for discrimination suits by anyone who was not offered the same second chance. Bottom line, they have to treat everyone exactly the same or risk significant liability.

This is the chance a person takes when they resign. Any employer can decide to place a person on their "do not rehire" list, and the reason can be simply that you resigned in the past, for any reason. That is the prerogative of the employer.

this is interesting to me, esp caliotter's post, as I keep wondering why I have applied somewhere I worked before with no luck. I didn't resign during orientation, but maybe they have the other policy you mentioned. I think I will call and ask tomorrow!
