If you are a student and someone asks in class "has anyone seen someone that has had such and such treatment?" Can you answer "yes I know someone that has this procedure done right now". Would this be in violation of HIPPA? What if the instructor asks you if you had seen this at a specific clinical place. Is answering the teacher a violation?

first it's........hipaa not hippa the health insurance portability and accountability act of 1996 (hipaa; pub.l. 104-191, 110 stat. 1936, enacted august 21, 1996)
to share with another student looking for a specific diagnosis is not a violation of hipaa unless you are texting, talking, e-mailing, the information outside tihe clinical setting and including patient identifiers. sharing an experience is itself not a hipaa violation until you place indentifiers with the experience like facility, room number, or md.
summary of the hipaa privacy rule
Esme12,
HIPAA...whoops. I actually looked at that cite prior to posting but was still unsure about this particular scenario like can you respond in class w/out mentioning a name or obvious identifiers , but more importantly can you answer a professor that has asked you in class where you have seen this? Thanks for your response.
