Hip Pain

Published

Alright my fellow nurses. I have a patient who has DJD in her left hip, but is having right hip pain when she walks. To the point she cannot bear weight at all. She had it x-rayed today, no breaks. Probably a little arthritis. But what puzzles me is she only has the pain when ambulating, no pain when sitting. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Sounds suspicious to me. Even though I'm not a nurse yet. Maybe puzzling is the more appropriate word. :)

Has anyone done a straight leg test yet? Lying down.....sitting?

Reason I'm asking is I heard of a pt at my LTC clinical who c/o pain when amb and when given the straight leg test (normally for back pain :)) it didnt add up.

Changes in gait can cause pain in other joints that arent affected by arthritis. Adjusting the way one steps, moves the legs during walking to prevent pain from an arthritic joint can cause unaffected joints to have pain.
