Hello all,

I thought I would start a thread for those of us applying to HCC's Spring 2013 nursing program. I am a Veterinary Technician/stay at home mom. I'm gathering everything for my application and hoping to drop it off at HCC soon. The deadline isn't until 6/1 but they recommend turning it in at least 30 days in advance. I'm a current HCC student. I was planning on applying for Fall this year, but am now expecting a little girl to arrive in July so spring it is! My pre-req GPA is 3.86 (all A's and 1 B), I'm hoping that this is good enough to get me a spot in the program for DM evening classes. Good luck to all!

I was told by a friend of mine that just graduated. If we can get a head start on the dose calculations that would help for the 1st test 2-3 weeks into the course. I am going to meet with him soon to find out what he is referring to. I will share the info as i get it.. :)

He probably means calculating the correct amount of medicine. I've being using this to refresh my math memory: DosageHelp.com - Helping Nursing Students Learn Dosage Calculations - Mass for Mass Questions

that is probably it. Thank you so much for sharing! It has been a long time since I took math classes. I will be studying up to be ready for Jan.

Before joining her current HCC Nuclear Med program my wife applied for SPC nursing. They gave her elective BSC courses for HCC's A&P at first, but they changes it to their BSC2085(L)/86(L) after she appealed it based on the curriculum being the same. Their nursing app is free. Only issue is they give preference to Pinellas County residents first. Marissa was automatically denied due to their being more "qualified" Pinellas County residents than spots available.

There's another option that I considered, that you might like. Pinellas County Technical School has an LPN program that is half online with clinicals on a weekend. After this you could do the transition online at Excelsior, or a community college.

Thank you for the information, I will look into that! If my appeal is not accepted I am planning on applying for Fall-13 start. With a 3.57 GPA I think I will just make it but if not, LPN route is a good plan B. :)

If it is in my favor, I live in Wesley Chapel off CL as well, so if I do get in, we can all carpool! But I know that the evenings are hard to come by. At this point, I will be happy with any spot...ALTHOUGH I really want evenings.

Simmola, would you mind telling me your GPA? I am trying to figure out where I stand as far as getting in as an alternate. I did call HCC on Monday to try and find out the lowest GPA accepted, but they said they won't have an answer for me until Thursday or Friday. So I'm going to call them tomorrow to find out.

Hello all! Congrats to evrybody that got in!

I received an acceptance letter and accepted my seat, im requesting dmnw. I actually wanted to know who is actually all up to date on vaccines? I dont have my shot records and have no way to get them. Anybody else in the same boat? Any suggestions will be soooo appreciated!

I am in the process of trying to obtain my childhood vaccine records. If I am unable to I will pay for titers, then get the vaccines I need done/redone.

when i requested my high school transcripts there was also a fee to get a copy of my shot records. This would have been provided when i started school. Just a thought. Does anyone have a copy of the shots we need to get? I might go ahead and get them done before the orientation period. Wonder if insurance will pay for any of them?

I posted it a few days ago, you should be able to find it by going back a few days. If you have full coverage insurance and go to a participating provider you will likely have your shots covered at 100%. Most full coverage insurance will cover a PPD too, the issue is getting doctor offices to actually bill insurance for a PPD. Try Take Care Health, they'll bill your insurance then bill you later. I had to pay 100% of the PPD because of my deductable, but even then it was only $3.60 after the claim was filed because of insurance discounted rates. Unless you're pregnant, most insurances will not cover titers. Best bet is to shop around. Best price i've found so far is Online Medical Lab Tests | Blood Tests .

THANKS FOR REPLYING! I ACTUALLY LOOKED INTO TRYING TO GET IT FROM MY HIGH SCHOOL BUT THEY ARE JUST GIVING ME THE RUN AROUND. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A NEW PRIMARY FOR NEXT WEEK, AND THEY SUGGESTED DOING TITERS. SO I THINK THATS THE ROUTE IM GOING TO BE TRYING. MY NEXT QUESTION IS TO SHAUNY2K3....SO YOU DO THINK INSURANCE WILL COVER THE TITERS, AND IMMUNIZATIONS? BECAUSE I HAVE A FEELING IM GOING TO BE STARTING FROM SCRATCH! i CANT EVEN REMEMBER THE LAST TIME I HAD SHOTS.

Do you have a major medical plan? e.g. employer sponsored HMO, POS, PPO? If so, your vaccines should be covered as a preventive benefit (100% coverage) and the PPD under the lab test benefits. Insurance typically won't cover titers unless you're pregnant and it's ordered by an OB (there are some exceptions). Check out the list I made on page 57 to see what the requirements are.

Does anyone know what the cut off GPA is? I had to have another letter mailed to me and still have not received it. Thanks everyone.

So far the lowest GPA accepted that I've seen posted here was a 3.52. That's not the official cutoff though.
