Hi, is there anyone here attending HCC's evening/weekend or day program here? If you are, cn you give me some insight as to how it is? How do they incorporate Process 1, process 2, Pharmacology and math into 2 evenings a week?
How is the pharmacy class and what type of math is it? Which class have you found to be the most challenging? How do you manage to incorporate working and doing the program fulltime? What is the most challenging aspect of the program?'
Thanks.

I am a day student. But as far as I know the evening program is not different from ours. You have 2 lectures for 3 hours a week (for evening class they are given in the evening time, for us-in the morning and in the afternoon). And one clinical day, which is 10 hours long. We have our clinical on any working day of the week, evening class have clinical day on Saturday. Usually they have 2 hospitals to go and 2 days. It is up to the students to choose which day they want to go and what hospital, but sometimes the teacher decided that and you do not have choice (like for me this semester). If you have some circumstances you can come to them and ask but they can not accommodate everybody, be ready for that.
As for the content of the program. You are taught all the information ( foundation, med-surg, pharmacology, psych, etc in NP 1, 2, and 4). You are given a schedule of lectures at the beginning of the semester. NP 3 is peds and OB+ one separate class of psych (2 credits). I'd say their program is designed well. The only thing I 'd like to change is, for example, this semester we have 3 weeks of psych in the middle of med-surg content, and we did not have our med-surg test yet. We will finish psych portion, have psych test, and then come back to med surge and have the test on the information we have covered before the test. This happened because we were late with med-surge, we had to have med-surge test and then strart psych, but...here is how it happened.
Thanks Skazka. Do you think that it will help for me to take the Pharmacy class elsewhere and have it transfer in, in terms of lightening the work load for me as I have absolutely have to work full time. In addition, if I am accepted, I have down time from this May to next year Jan.
Also, do you guys incorportate math/dosage calculation as a separate class and if you do, which semester doyou take it? How have you found the program in terms of workload? Was it really overwhelming the first semester? and if it was, do you think that it is doable if you work.
p.s Which campus do you attend? Dale Mabry or Plant City?
I am in Dale Mabry campus afternoon class.
I think that it is useless for you to take pharmacology, it is not transferable. As for pharmacology/dosage calculation, they do not cover it in class, it is up to the students to study that part. In NP 1 in the beginning of the semester they said to us what chapters to read (it was about 8-9 chapters from the book) and we had a test a week after (it was easy if you read everything and practice problems). In NP 2 you have to take math test in the beginning of the semester again in order to be able to go to clinicals. This time they did not tell us what to read and what to study at all!!!! I was terrified! In 2 days we had math test, it was easy, you have to score 80% in order to be able to go to the hospital. The test was like that one from NP 1, nothing new. But I heard in the morning class it was harder and it was new. Fortunately, you have 3 attempts to take math test. You have to score more than 80% in one of them and the grade for that does not count for your final grade, it is just for clinicals. IN NP1 it counted towards final grade and it was great as eveybody does well on that.
The program is hard, but I like it:)))) Now it seems easier and more understandable. You get used to NCLEX questions after a while. But at first you dont know what do they ask you about!!!! I am better and better in this. I do not know if it is just me (because I am studying a lot and practice a lot) or their teaching helps. I think first is more likely.
COngratulations on your acceptance!!!!
Thanks for anserwing. I haven't been accepted yet but I will apply this May. I expect my gpa to be around 3.42-3.57 so I hope that it will be good enough. May I ask why a NUR Pharmacy class won't transfer into the program if it is from Palm Beach CC nursing program? Just curious. I will also take your advice up and read ahead as well as practice the math calculations.
So basically you are saying is that there is no separate math/calc class in the program? How are the people doing in the program who work? Also, have you all kept all of your students who started with you? or have some dropped or failed?
I have no answer WHY Nur Pharm class will not be transferred. That is how I THINK because there is no separate Pharm class for nursing program in HCC. I may be wrong, ask them about it, but I am 90% sure.
There are some people who work. Some of them even do great (I know one who is CNA full time at TGH and she got A, but she has no children or husband). So it is possible. I have an opportunity not to work, I do not have kids and I am doing good. There are some who failed or dropped, about 15% from my class. Some of them are retaking NP I ( I did not know it was possible but they are retaking. The fact.) In my NP II there are couple students retaking NP II with us. One girl failed NP 2 by only one point. They did not add it to her, they do not add extra points to anybody. This girl has toddler twins and I know it is hard with kids, small kids and when there are two of them...just one point was enought for her to pass the class...but...
Thansk Skaza. How many people are in your class? "Also, did you all use the Potter and Perry book for Nursing 1? If you did, do you know which are the first chapters that was required reading?
thanks for all of your help and answering my questions. Based on your answer re the PHARM class, u are probably correct. I will use the websites and books that I have and practice dosage calculations, conversions on my own. I will also read at least all of the reading required for Nursing 1. If I am accepted, the class doesn't start until Jan 2010 so I would have about 7mths of down time.
I will be taking Chem and Dev Psych in the summer as I don't have anything else to take lol!
It sounds as if yhou are doing well in your studies. keep it up
We used both perry and potter (for a month and a half) and Lewis (rest of the semester)for the first semester.
From my notes:
Perry and Potter chapters were: 1-10, 15-33,

Hello, I am in my 3rd semester of the nights and weekends program at HCC. Everything skazka told you is correct (I think, I didn't read thru it too carefully) Here is my take:
1. in the nights and weekend program the average age of the student is older and pretty much all of us work full time and have kids (at 31 I am one of the youngest in the class - the oldest is over 60). We all help eachother as much as we can. It is so much work but just know that there are people in my class who have passed with young kids and full time jobs.
2. Your first semester will be very very hard. It is good that you have time to prepare. Review all of your A&P. Buy the Clinical Calculations book (the one they made us buy is called Clinical Calculations with applications to general and specialty areas by Kee and Marshall) and teach yourself the math. Do the first 5 or so chapters. Like Kazka said, they don't really teach it to you they expect you to learn it yourself.
3. don't take a pharm class. It will be a waste of time and $$ as a separate pharm class is not required at HCC. Sure, they will accept it, but it won't count toward your degree. Pharm is integrated into Nursing Process I, II, III and IV.
4. Get your CPR certification and make sure it is good for 2 years. You can do that thru the Red Cross or http://tampabaycpr.com/ which is good because it is only one night and is for 2 years.
5. don't worry so much about all of this! honestly, the best thing you can do is spend tons of time with friends and family now because you sure as hell won't be once school starts :) Do some yoga. Learn relaxation exercises. Nursing school takes over your life so enjoy your time.
6. also, just the fact that you are thinking of all of this and asking questions shows me that you are a detail-oriented, conscientious person who likes things to be organized and likes to know what is going on. I hate to tell you this, but nursing school is disorganized and will be very frustrating for you. It was for me. I felt like no one was giving us straight info and even the teachers didn't know what is going on half the time. Just be prepared because I wasn't and it drove me crazy.
I can't think of anything else right now. Let me know if you have any more questions -- be glad to help. GOOD LUCK and enjoy the next 7 months.
Thanks so much Lola. I appreciate you and Skaza both filling in the gaps for me. right now I am at HCC's Brandon Campus library studying for an AP2 lecture and lab test in 1.5hrs and also for a Micro test on monday. I have a sister in the day program at BC in Hollywood, fl and one about to start in May. From my sister, I somewhat know what to expect and you all have basically stated the same things she did which was to focus on AP, health assessment, dosage calc/nursing math and reading ahead.
I will be applying for the Dale mabry evening program but really Plant city is closer to me as I get off at 5pm- will have to work something out with job. Even if south Shore offer the evening program, it will be better driving 30mins on I75 vs 45mins to 1hr on I75, 275 etc.
I hope that they are a bit more organized than you have stated and it does me good to hear that their are other older students who work and have families who have done well and passed the class. One thing that is different at HCC than BC is that it seems you have 3 times to pass a test, at BC, it is only 2 times.
Anymore details that you can tell me about your journey or others would be more than helpful. I just purchased a used Medical Terminology book that I will be reviewing. I won't take the Pharm class as it seems it would be a waste of time but I will take the 3 cr medical terminology class at Ybor this summer. I had no clue that it was even offered until a fellow classmate clued me in to look under the prefix HSC.
Thanks again.

Hi there, my name is Tiffany and i am currently taking my pre requs for the nursing program. Can u please share with me if u got all A's in order to be accepted into the program.
I believe that the lowest GPa accepted was 3.3. I would not say that all As are required although I had all As in Micro 1, Ap1 and Ap2, sociology etc. I would strongly advise you to get the best grade possible that you can. Strive for As. If you get a C, strive to get an A in another subject to turn that C to a B and then you have to get another A to keep your GPA above 3.0
Just try to keep your gpa to around 3.35 or 3.4 to be on the safe side for all of your pre-reqs. Don't slack on any of your pre-reqs because 2 Cs can make it difficult to maintain a decent gpa.
