Hi, My name is Tianna (anna for short), i'm a sophmore in high school and i want to go into the medical field. I would like to go into the nursing field. However I really don't know if it is right for me. Mostly I love kids and want to be in the OB but I heard so many stories about how tough it can be. I'm just soooooooo on what field of nursing i want to go into and I just don't know what it all requires. I know that I'm want in the medical field and I know this basics in it, and what fields there are and nursing just seems right. I just want to know what like classes I need to take and stuff like that. I really want to go to University of Michigan but my mom doesn't want me too! She says that she wants my closer to home and i'm like it's right aross the border! (i live in Findlay, OH). But money is the last thing that I'm worried about. Mostly my focuse is on my school work. I'm invovled in a program called Medical Explorers which is really how I realize that I wanted to be a nurse, and I am taking Anatomy this year, and plan to take Medical Technology 1 and 2 Juinor and Senior year. In my family I'm always the person people come to when they get a cut or need helpwith homework or need help with a problem but nobody really knows how to help me whenever I really need something like this so yeah. Thanks A lot!!

Anna, welcome to allnurses :)
You'll do different clinicals in nursing school, so you'll get a taste of most of the specialties. I've heard fellow students totally change their minds about what area they want to go into after having a clinical in that area. I've also heard many that LOVED the area they thought they would HATE.
Good for you taking those classes while in high school. You'll be ahead of the game when you do get to nursing school because everything won't seem like Greek to you :chuckle

Hi Anna - welcome to allnurses :)
Truesn's right on the money - you'll get a lot of different experience on your clinicals, and may find that you really enjoy something that you thought you'd hate. You certainly don't need to make a decision about specialising until you're well in to it.
Before you decide, you might like to see if you can shadow a nurse for a day, and get a picture of what a shift is like.
Good luck!

Hi there, I would recommend spending some time in the hospital as a volunteer. I did that in a couple of different hospitals as a teenager, and it was alot of fun. Talk with the nurses, ask for advice. See how you feel in the environment.
