High Cost of Getting Ready to Move to US

Published

I was just going over the cost of what it will cost me to move to the US - to write the NCLEX it will cost me over 1000.00 as I live no where near a testing center and will have to fly to one the cities listed - driving is out of the question, the closest destination is a day and half worth of driving one way and it is winter to boot...Then there is the Visa Screen and the cost of getting my university transcript - holy cow....This is adding up and I don't even have a firmed up job offer yet with a promise to back pay these expenses...can someone tell me an easier way around this??

Thanks,

Jo, RN, BN, BA

No easy way around it, unless you find someone who will help defray the costs. Some placement agencies will help, look in the Canadian Nurse magazine, some advertise there. Good luck!

Those fees are the same for anyone else. But a word of caution, if you have an agecny help you with those expenses, you will be giving them about $5 per hour of your pay, without you knowing it over the next two years. I definitely advise against that, or you will be paying a much higher loan than you would get thru a lona shark.

My suggestion, do some overtime and bit the bullet.

I have been in the states for 19+years. At least at one time some hospitals in California and Texas were defraying these costs if you would agree to work for a set amount of time. You might check out web sites for hospitals in these states. Also if there is a nursing shortage in an area, the hospitals will usually go a lot farther in defering costs than in other areas. Good Luck!

The best company to work with when making a move would be Career Medical Group, Natalie they get the job for you before the move with the salary you want. I know a lot of people on here are wondering why I keep saying this over and over again. I have moved all over and in order for me to do so I have had to be assisted. There were so many things that kept bothering me but with their assistance I have made several moves to at least four different states and they have helped me with every move. I was impressed with their assistance. I now sound like a commercial but I guess you can only speak of the things that you have done. I was so fearful of moving the first time, I was wondering whether I was going to make enough money to care for myself and whether or not I would like where I was going and who I could go to and ask for help if I needed it. My friends turned me on this group and I was hesitant about it all at first but I found it to be more than I expected. If you want I can tell them to assist you as well. They ask you to do a lot of things ahead of time before you move. When you move a lot nothing is familiar to you and every day after the move you need to have sources you can rely on if you do not have family members with you. If I ever ran into problems in the new state I moved to I could contact them. What ever I needed I was able to contact this person and they were on it. I thought they would just get me the job and then turn me a loose in an unfamiliar place. They did not.

I disagree I have used them for every move that I have had and they have ensured that I have had a six figure income salary and I have asked them if they get money from it they do but for someone to find me a six figure position in nursing it was well worth the pay. There are some who will do that but the one that I have had did not and they discussed their salary with me and mine. Six figures in my opinion is well worth me paying for employment. That is why I speak so highly of the group I work with. I did not start making that amount until I made my first move and from then on I have been very well compensated. I really believe it is the group or agency you work with. I was referred to the agency I went with and they asked me how much I was interested in making and got me what I asked for. You need to do your homework when it comes to agencies. Then again it may have just been the person I worked with.

Agencies work to benefit NURSES not to harm them. Read the article below.

Nurses working for agencies have traditionally been paid a higher rate to compensate them for entitlements such as holiday pay and long service leave that permanent employees receive. Already in the minority in the NSW system, they make up 680 positions compared with 35,500 full-time positions.

Agency nurses say along with the loss of income - which can be as much as $100 per shift - they resent being forced back into a system they had previously chosen to leave.

I feel like I am being bullied to try and force us to the public health system. When it is a chioce that I made for my personal career.

"I am no longer able to continue working at the Children's Hospital [Westmead] because it would reduce my salary and conditions ... I would be losing approximately $8 per hour.

"I believe there are quite a number of agency nurses that are refusing to work in public hospitals because of it."

Well I can agree with the crazy costliness of preparing to move to the US. This has been costing me a mint, everything is from $5 to $50 and it adds up quickly. I had some trouble finding an apartment but thank god I had someone from one complex help me get into another. Shipping my car and getting the moving truck has been a HUGE headache. I thought I had found a great mover, but now he tells me it will take 7-14 days to ship my stuff. That includes my car. I cannot go without my car in a new place for 2 weeks. How ridiculous is that? So i'm just trying to find someone who can get my stuff there a bit faster and i think i'm going to put my car on the train. I can go without my car longer here than i can there.

I have also found the people who work at the CGFNS totally not helpful. It's very irritating because I'm paying them all this money and if they don't like their jobs they should find new ones. It's a pain, but I hope the experience will be worth it.

Good luck to everyone who is in the same boat.

Hi Diva -

Moving can be such a pain - I've done it coast to coast a couple of times in my life in Canada and know what being without a car is like. Maybe you could rent for a couple of weeks? Sometimes the cost of getting shipped faster is actually the same price as getting a rental? I hope the hospital you are going to work at is going to reimburse you (maybe they could for the rental?). Costs do add up - and it is sort of gamble if you really don't know much about the area you are moving to. I hope it all works out for you - keep the faith :p

JJ

thanks for the message...i'm looking forward to the change it's just all the stuff in the meantime...and yes the hospital is reimbursing me for my moving expenses...not sure about the car rental, i'll have to look into it and discuss it with my recruiter.:balloons:
