HI THERE!-Need help with RPN/LPN working in ER

Published

I am an RPN from Niagara Falls Canada.I have worked in the Emergency Dept

for 14 yrs and have been an RPN for 30 yrs. I have been chosen to do an

educational fellowship on Expanding the Role of the RPN in the Emergency

Dept. My problem is there is very little information as most ER's do not

have RPN/LPN working in their Dept. I would like to hear views from LPNS,

RNS in regards to how they feel about RPNS working in Emergency Depts?

Is there a role for RPN/LPN in ER Depts in USA. There are very few ERs in

Canada that do have Registered Practical Nurses working . In our ER I know

the RPN is a valued employee . I would like to see more RPNS working

in ERS everywhere.

Looking forward to hearing your views

hi joyce,

i worked as an rpn for 10 years in ontario. i certainly think rpns can and should be better utilized in ers. have you though of contacting the college of nurses of ontario in regards to this? they may have some articles in their back issues of "the standard" that relate to rpns practicing in the er. http://www.cno.org

Hello Joyce!

I have work in the ER/Fast Track as an LPN for 5 years. A lot of the ER's in my area have LPN's in their Fast Track. I'm not sure what you need to know but feel free to email me at

[email protected]

and I will be glad to help!

I work as an LPN in the ER/Fast Track as well. I work alongside with a NP who works alongside with a Dr. We have two major hospitals here and the other hospital doesn't employ LPNs at all, they use LPNs as techs. :uhoh3:

Hi Janlynn

Thank you so much for responding. Could please tell me the name of your

hospital - where you are located. Also could you please tell what your

job role is . Do you have a set description of your job role. How long have they

had RPNS working in the fast track unit. Do they not have RPNS in the general

ER. What does an LPN as a tech do?

Thanks again

I would appreciate your response- Joyce

Hi,

I am an LPN in Florida, I just recently transfered out of my hospitals ER to a surgical prep unit. I worked Adult and Pedi ER (level 1 trauma) as well as fast track.

Let me know if I can help.

Good luck!

Thank-you so much for taking the time to respond .I would very much

appreciate any help you can give me in regards to what your job description

was in the ER. You said you worked in Adult and Pedi ER(level 1). What kind

of patients are level ones. Did you need extra courses to work there. Is your

fast track unit mainly RPNS. Do you know if there is a Nurse Practice Act

for RPNS in each state. Do you have a job description written out for ER? I

am loading you down with questions. Good luck with your new job! How long

did you work in the Emergency Dept?

Take Care and Have a Good Day!

Joyce,

I work in Illinois. My job role is the same as any RN only my pts are less serious and need less resources. We base our pts on the ESI which means at triage they're either a 1,2,3,4, or 5. Fast Track nurses take the 4's and 5's. We get alot of broken bones, migraines, toothaches, etc. Sometimes pts aren't triaged right and I end up with a more serious pt. I usually keep them unless they're too serious and then I turf them, meaning I move them into an RN/Dr pod. I start my fair share of IV's, hang meds, give IM's (alot), etc. I work right in the main area of the ED only I have my own rooms which are Fast Track rooms. There are no other LPN's in our dept.

The other hospital I mentioned uses LPN's as techs--meaning they're basically doing CNA work.

I hope this helps. Take care!

Janet
