I am not going to AVC but I start my school in the fall and I too have been a CNA for a few years. I know how you feel about the confusing parts..lol... I totally understand! I bet I posted a ton of questions on how all this college stuff works. I am finally starting to understand it. Every college has diffirent pre-reqs required. My school doesn't require chemistry but yours does my school may require college algabra where yours may not. So, its just what that particular school requires. It looks like I will be in school for 3 years but a lot of the people say it will fly by so quick. I don't like the pre-req to get to the pre-req either..lol... Just hang in there and do it for yourself and kids. In the end I think you and I both will be happy we did. God Bless! Oh, I have been hearing that people just assume to go get there BSN instead of ADN because it averages out to be almost the same amount of time...I'm not sure though...
I know it is overwhelming! I go to a community college and the prereqs I had to take was chemistry and basic math, they also require biology but I took that in high school. Then because of the chemistry I was able to do A&P1 and 2. And the basic math that I took will allow me to take the actual math that's part of the nursing program. Anyway....keep on your advisor, they're there for a reason...use him/her, lol. Good luck!
Pre-reqs at my school are
*A&P l
*College algebra
*Computer skills
*General Psychology
*CNA class if not already a CNA
Gen eds are
*writing 1
*writing 2
*Developmental Psychology
*Medical Microbiology
*Heritage/humanities course
*A&P ll
*Basic Public speaking
I've pulled out all my gen-eds with my pre-reqs so I've been in school a year already and I've got another semester of gen-eds before I start the program. It's a lot to take in when you start college, especially when you have a specific list of classes you need to complete to get into nursing school! This site is an excellent tool to use when you have questions! Good Luck to you, And welcome to the allnurses community!
I'm doing a BSN, that's usually the only programs that require statistics but some associate programs require it as well. The associate degree program I was going to do only had four classes as a nursing pre-req as well. I opted for the BSN program though and with my school you have to finish pre-reqs AND general ed classes to start nursing courses/clinicals. I'm on my last year of pre-reqs and it took me three years to get all those classes done. I honestly think we take too many courses.
College Requirements:
Orientation Seminar
English Comp I & II
English Lit I & II
History I & II
Philosophy I & II
General Psychology
Speech
Sociology
Finite Mathematics
Nursing Pre-reqs:
General Biology I & II
Human Anatomy
Human Physiology
Statistics
Developmental Psychology
General Chemistry
Organic/Biochemistry
21 classes... but I've only got 8 left! Thank god.
I start my pre-nursing this fall & on my schedule 1st semester is: College 101 & Freshman Inquiry (both writing classes), Gen Psychology, Gen Chemistry I, US National Government.
The rest of the prereqs I have to cover over the next 2 years are:Into to Phylosophy, Human A&P, Animal Physiology, Nutrition, Micro & Immuno, Sociology, Child Psych, Adolescent Pysch, Adulthood & Aging, Statistical Analysis plus electives like Fine Arts & Anthropology.:specs:
Jeez, I'm getting a headache just thinking about it, LOL!
I have looked into 3 different nursing schools & they do vary considerably on requirements.
I guess it's all par for the course, no pun intended.

Hey guys and gals. I've finally decided to pursue my dream job. I worked as a CNA for a few years...started college...got pregnant, dropped out...now with a 3 year old and a 1 year old, I'm finally doing it. I have a question. I'm going for my ASN at AVC in Lancaster, CA. And I'm reading all your guys' posts and it seems like you all have a lot more prereqs than I do, like statistics and nutrition aren't on the list for me, well not on the list I checked online for the program, I haven't spoken to a counselor yet. It just said
And of course I'll have to take General Biology to get into Biology 201, and Chemistry 101 too, as prereqs to the prereqs. And I've already taken basic English at my last college, so that should transfer over... It's all so confusing. Then there's all the general ed...aaaahhh..it feels like it's going to take forever to even get to the real deal.
So are most of you going straight for your BSN, and that's why I feel like my load is less????
Is anyone else starting at AVC?? Or has anyone been there?? How is it?
